The word Volkswagen is pronounced as “Folks wagon”, which literally means “people’s car.” The Volkswagen came into being in May 1937 and was renamed in 1938. The main person behind its inception was Ferdinand Porsche. The first mass production was that of the Volkswagen Beetle in 1945 under the instructions of the British Military Government. It was managed by Major Ivan Hirst. Over the years, Volkswagen has strived to provide the common person great quality cars at an economic price. Volkswagen’s first official launch in India was with its sedan Passat. Previously, many dealers have imported the Volkswagen Touareg and Phaeton models to Indian car enthusiasts, but the Passat marked the official entry of Volkswagen in the Indian car market in September 2007.
