14 December, 2007 : Soon on the heels of Satyam’s SatNav, Delhi based company CE Info Systems, has launched a Bangalore navigation map system called – MapmyIndia - an in car GPS device. This portable interactive device for cars has a pre-loaded digitised Survey of India’s maps and real time voice guidance. It can be used across India - in both urban centers and rural areas. Payment of annual subscription fees ensures that the GPS chip is upgraded with the latest maps.
MapmyIndia device can be mounted on the windshield or the dashboard while driving or carried in hand while sitting in the backseat. The device gives the driver turn-by-turn guidance, names the location and gives directions, distance covered and estimated time to reach the destination. Given the Indian unpredictability, the navigator has been equipped to give – auto detour and re-routing directions. For leisure time entertainment, the navigator can play music, movies, and also display games.
The company plans to invest around Rs. 20 Crore in sales and distribution of this portable device over the next year. An equal sum has already been spent to create the digitized maps. The company expects to sell one lakh nagivation devices within the next year. MapmyIndia maps are available on the Internet or via mobile phones or, using these portable devices, in cars.
CE Info Systems is tying up with leading automobile companies, handset and personal navigation device makers, software providers, mobile operators, Internet portals, and retail and distribution networks of cars, accessories, and consumer electronic products to ascertain that if someone wants to buy this beauty then they can.
In 2006, US witnessed sales of 20 million personal navigation devices for cars, while over 30 million were sold across Europe. India, in 2008, will definitely give these numbers a run for their money.
