Maruti Suzuki Heads with a Green Approach
Global warming along with surging oil prices has compelled many big car manufacturers to introduce lighter and more fuel-efficient cars. Car manufacturers are walking towards green technologies to ensure a safe and clean environment.

The green revolution in India is started by Maini Group, the manufacturer of India’s lone electric car Maini Reva, which is completely emission free. Following the suit is Honda Seil India which has dressed the car industry with green clothes with its recently launched model Honda Civic Hybrid. With its Civic Hybrid, Honda sings the melody of nature and gives an opportunity to green car lovers to rejoice the beauty of ecology.

Currently, only these two cars are available in India that carries the ‘green’ tag. However, these eco-friendly cars are not very popular among consumers due their own demerits. The Reva fails to score in terms of space which can carry only two adults including driver in front and the rear can only accommodate two kids. The Honda Civic Hybrid also did not gained much fame initially when it was launched but received a whopping response from consumers after it slashed the Civic price by around 8 Lakh.

Similarly, many car manufacturers are on their hunt to adapt innovative technologies and features that are eco-friendly. The chase to build the most fuel-efficient car goes on with the search. Furthermore, using advanced engines, recyclable materials for car production, using light metal like aluminium to achieve maximum fuel economy have also become an integral part of the automotive industry. With so many car manufacturers applying these techniques and measures, Maruti Suzuki was among those who started a green approach.

In the present scenario, when many car manufacturers are struggling hard to safeguard environment and conserve fuel Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. heads with a green approach. In pursuit of environment protection and energy conservation, the company fulfills various regulatory requirements and follows eco-friendly policies.

Maruti implements various practices and measures to maintain and improve the condition of highly polluted environment while strictly adhering to the laws of nature. Some of the key practices and actions taken by the company are as follows:

Practicing 3R

Maruti Suzuki defines 3R as reduce, reuse, and recycle. The company is in continuous process of promoting 100% recyclable and reusable car parts. It also targets reducing fresh water consumption and implement rain water harvesting.

The newly launched Maruti Suzuki A-Star is a good example of company’s green policies. This new car is designed to meet the European ELV (End-of-Life Vehicle) norms which confirm that car is around 85% recyclable and is also devoid of toxic materials like Lead, Mercury, and Chromium.

Promoting Green Procurement

Maruti Suzuki is also encouraging its customers to act upon environment friendly approach. Even at the supplier’s end the company conducts regular training and education programmes. Along with the suppliers, such sessions are also held at all possible places comprising people from all arenas of the car industry.

In addition, the surveys and researches are done to learn innovative ways of improving ecological balance and reduce automotive emissions. The survey reports are of great significance to all vendors and car dealers as these help them to market their cars better. It also provides environmental education to all the personnel working in the company.

Promoting Energy Conservation

Excelling in spreading the need of eco-friendly car technologies for car industry, Maruti Suzuki also promotes energy conservation. It does this through various initiatives, education, and improvements on the shop floor. In recent years, the adoption of energy saving technologies has increased tremendously.

In response, the company has introduced three-coat-one-bake painting system at its facility. This kind of painting system helps to reduce energy consumption without compromising the productivity. The company is gradually moving towards making its entire fleet of cars green with advanced and efficient technologies.

Certification and Awards

In recognition to its green approach, Maruti Suzuki has received various certifications and awards. Some of the prestigious certifications and awards are listed below:
  • In 1999 Maruti Suzuki was certified for establishing and maintaining EMS as per ISO 14001:1996 standards. The company was again recertified for the same in 2002.
