Overview

The WagonR was first introduced in Japan. Initially, it was not very well received in India, largely because the Hyundai Santro, which had been launched much before the WagonR, had already become popular in the small car segment. However, in recent times, the WagonR's popularity has soared, thanks to an intensive marketing blitz as well as better ergonomics and acceptability.

The WagonR, with its flat-boxy shape, is an ideal car for the urban Indian nuclear family, and is currently rated among the top-selling cars in the country. For 2006, Maruti Udyog Ltd. has given the vehicle a major re-haul and an all-new attitude. It is now sleek and slick.

The newly introduced petrol-LPG version has been named DUO. Its control panel has a sporty look with a metal finish. The Vxi variant features electronically adjustable outside rear-view mirrors. WagonR Vxi is the country's first car in the B-Segment to have this feature.

Powertrain & Performance

The WagonR is driven by a 1.1L In-line 4 engine capable of producing 64 bhp and 84 Nm of torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on the LX, LXi and VXi trims, while a 3-speed automatic is available on the AX variant.

This indigenously manufactured car took 18 months to reach completion, and Maruti Udyog promised better performance and fuel efficiency this time around. Officials from the company also boast that the running cost is 33 per cent lesser than its petrol sibling. The DUO has a factory-fitted LPG kit and the added advantage of a warranty benefit, making it a safe option.

This tall-boy is a practical car to own. Ride quality is adequately firm. A well-tuned suspension ensures a smooth ride.

Build & Styling

New maruti wagonr Car - Interior

There are two redesigned versions of the WagonR -- the original petrol version that has been over-hauled and the other variant with the factory-fitted LPG kit. The manufacturers have added a little oomph and excitement to the WagonR this time around. It now sports a pleasing and slick design with a sassy front grille, upgraded lights and a more streamlined bumper. Some of its exterior features comprise upswept headlamps, a sporty tail lamp, an aggressive grille and an attractive tail gate.

Its interiors are stylish and quite spacious. The LPG tank is cleverly concealed, and the spare-wheel is inventively mounted. This car has ample stowage and a flexible space-saving Italian design (or so the manufacturer claims). Other amenities include ergonomic seating features, head rests, an ashtray, front and rear door pockets, a cup holder, floor carpets and an armrest.

Standard safety features include side-impact beams, a collapsible steering column, 8-inch booster-assisted brakes, child-proof rear door locks, halogen headlamps, seatbelts, a breakdown diagnosis, a one-of-a-kind high mount stop lamp and a headlamp leveling device.
