Volkswagen's Skoda Auto is based in the Czech Republic, and develops and manufactures premium automobiles for the world market. The year 2001 witnessed the advent of Skoda Auto's Indian operations, beginning with a plant at Shendra on the Ahmedabad border (the company's single manufacturing unit outside of Europe).
The Skoda Laura was launched in 2005 with a path-breaking engine technology. Based on the A5 platform, the Laura brings with it Skoda's classic design elements and an impressive array of contemporary luxury. Skoda launched the Skoda Laura Elegance in March 2007 in India with the existing Laura Laurin and Klemant MT and AT variants. Skoda Laura's third variant Laura Elegance comes with world-class technology, well finished exteriors, and luxurious interiors. Skoda's BRAND NEW fourth variant Laura Ambiente launched in October 2007 and comes with better and more exciting standard features.
The Laura's Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) ensures the maximum control of the vehicle in emergency braking situations. Acceleration Skid Restrain (ASR) is another feature that prevents slippage of the drive wheels. It is also equipped with ample safety features such as six airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), automatic rain-sensing windscreen wipers and a 'light assist system' that is activated in a tunnel or when the vehicle is deemed not to be in well-lit surroundings.
The Skoda Laura nestles amongst an elite list of peers that includes the Accord, Sonata Embera and the Camry. The new Skoda Laura Elegance offers matchless combination of enticing looks and modern technology at a price lower than that of the Laura's existing variants. This new variant has been launched to offer more options at a competitive price to be the competition.
The Laura Laurin and Klemant is equipped with a L1.9L In-line 4, 105 bhp engine that serves up 250 Nm of torque. It offers a choice of two transmissions: a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Laura Elegance and Ambiente are fitted with the same 1.9-litre diesel engine that delivers a maximum power of 105 bhp. It comes with a five-speed manual transmission but without the DSG automatic.
The cutting edge 1.9L PD (Pump Duse technology) engine has a direct injection system that burns the fuel cleaner and helps maximise power production as well as fuel efficiency. It also possesses minimal emission levels, which makes it environment-friendly as well. The frugal engine with manual transmission sprints to 100 kmph in just 11.8 seconds.
The Skoda Laura's Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) combines the pleasure of manual shifting with the precision and ease of an automatic transmission. The upgraded chassis, in tandem with new axles and electromechanical multi-function steering, gives the car a comfortable and sturdy handling. Its rack and pinion steering has an electromechanical power assistance that makes for steering ease and responsiveness even at high speeds.

The Skoda Laura has an intrinsic appeal. A lean and minimalist structure gives it a sleek look. An attractive chrome grille with vertical fins in the front fascia makes for a substantial aura. Bumper integrated fog lights and clear glass headlights decorate the front. Its rounded-off window corners highlight the curve of the B pillar. Electrically adjustable side mirrors have integrated front turn signal lamps. Other exterior features comprise xenon head-lamps with power washers for visibility in daylight, 16-inch alloy wheels and dual chrome exhaust.
The cabin exudes a plush-luxurious quality with a touch of classic elegance. Leather reigns as upholstery. Seating is comfortable and spacious. It has a 4-way adjustable driver's seat with memory. The automated sunroof slides open at the touch of a button. Rear seats can be folded down to create optimal boot space.
Other novel touches include storage compartments in the front and the rear doors, an illuminated and refrigerated glove compartment, and a temperature-controlled box beneath the armrest. The Skoda Laura's dual-zone climatronic air-conditioning allows for individual temperature settings for the left and the right sides of the vehicle.
The Skoda Laura Ambiente comes with some features that were not available in Laura's previous variant. Features such as sunroof, front parking sensors, xenon headlamps, electric seats with memory function, electronic stability control, electric heating system for seats, steering mounted audio controls, and six air bags, which are absent in the Laura Elegance.
The Elegance comes with a new four-spoke power steering, electrically adjustable mirrors, part-leather seats, power windows, AC, tachometer, alloy wheels, climatronic air con system, rain sensors, a rear windshield defogger, clear lens headlamps and a single CD player. It also comes with safety features such as two air bags, immobiliser, cruise control and central locking.
