Maruti Suzuki Versa Review

Overview:
Designed to cater to the Indian joint family needs, Maruti Suzuki launched its multi-purpose vehicle Versa in 2001 with an excellent powertrain and ample space to carry a family of eight. Launched after Maruti Suzuki Omni's success, the Versa has three variants: Standard 5-seater, DX1 8-seater, and DX2 8-seater. All the three variants are powered by the same 1.3L petrol engine, which is mounted below the driver's seat. While the Maruti Suzuki Versa puts its contemporary MPV styling lines on display, it is not a head-turner but very practical.

Designed with price, power and functionality in mind, the Versa is value for money. It is slightly overpriced, but comes loaded with quality features. It is positioned in a slightly different category of MUVs and competes with diesel-powered vehicles like Tata Sumo and Chevrolet Tavera.

Powertrain and Performance:
The Versa is powered by a 1,298 cc, In-line 4, all-aluminium engine that cranks out 82 bhp at 6,000 rpm. The quiet engine comes with a 16 BIT Electronic Control Module (ECM) and meets the Bharat III emission norms. Power is transferred to the rear wheels and regulated by a 5-speed manual transmission. The 1.3L engine has the best power-to-weight ratio in its class. It has enough sprinting power and can make 0-100 kms in 14 secs; the Versa reaches peak torque of 10.4 kgm at a remarkably low 3,000 rpm.

Not just while accelerating but even in retardation, the Versa is quick enough to stop. The Versa comes equipped with McPherson Strut suspension system up front and coil springs with mass dampers at the rear. The tall stance and the stretched wheelbase of the car are well-engineered to avoid body rolls during tight cornering. Special dampening material is used around the engine to reduce vibrations. To sum it up, the Versa is a perfect van for city and inter-city travel. However, on highway rides, the vehicle takes some getting used to.

Build and Styling:
Focusing on the large Indian family, Maruti Suzuki constructed the Versa on a stretched wheelbase. Ample space is provided for passengers as well as cargo to make a perfect family outing. The layout for driver's seating, steering position and the short throw gear shifter make long journeys least stressful. Quality sound-proofing material is used to keep noise and vibrations away from the cabin. The exterior of the van does not look striking or very impressive. The tall van is susceptible to cross winds on highway and its poor aerodynamics induce drag, but still the Fuel Economy does not dip considerably. All the five doors can be centrally locked and additional safety is ensured with a child lock system.

Standard features on the fully loaded Versa include twin AC, power windows, door locks and power steering, rear wash wiper, alloy wheels, central locking, remote boot/ fuel lid opener, tachometer, child safety lock and defogger.
