India’s number one automobile manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, was formed in 1981 and the production of its first car "Maruti 800" kicked off in 1983. Since then, the company has produced several cars. Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, the first off-road vehicle of Maruti Suzuki, was launched in 1985. It is based on the Suzuki SJ long wheel base. This four wheel drive SUV has created waves in the Indian automotive industry at the time of launch.

Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is a 4x4 off roader available in the three variants, Soft Top, Hard Top, and Ambulance Car. Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is available in the following colors bright red, silky silver, superior white and icy blue.

Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is equipped with a powerful 1.3 L engine. The 1298cc 1.3-litre MPF1 16 valve gasoline engine pumps out a maximum power of 80 bhp @ 6000 rpm, with a maximum torque of 103Nm @ 4500 rpm. It has 4 cylinders. The MPFI (multi point fuel injection) system ensures improved performance and fuel efficiency. The engine is mated to a 5-speed all synchromesh manual transmission which offers incessant shifts. It offers high cruising speeds and better highway mileage. The capacity of the fuel tank is 40 litres and the engine oil 4 litres.
Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has a superb suspension system which provides a fantastic driving comfort on all types of Indian roads , be it plain or rough terrains. Adding to it is the high power to weight ratio that ensures faster and safer acceleration through streams and muddy terrain. Higher ground clearance ensures better off-road capability while driving on the hills and the diaphragm spring clutch helps reduce wear of parts. The high thermal conductivity of the engine ensures that the engine is effectively ignited when driving in snowy conditions and also ensures that there is no overheating and the car drives smoothly even in the hot deserted areas. The lighter weight of the engine enhances power output, traction, and responsiveness. The front and rear leaf spring suspension with double action damper helps improve handling and traction. It has front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. The brakes are present with booster. It has F78-15-4 PR 205/70R15 type tyres.
Maruti Suzuki Gypsy Exterior and Interior Features:
Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has a good amalgamation of style and substance with its bold design and stylish body graphics that beholds the traditional appeal of a SUV. Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is a boxy like structure with 4010 mm length, 1540 mm width and 1875 mm height. The wheel base is 2375 mm, front track is 1300 mm and rear track is 1310 mm. The aggressive yet impressive fascia adds more expression to the appeal.
The exterior features present are driver’s side rear view mirror, spare wheel cover, front footstep assembly, foldable front windscreen, fibre reinforced plastic/removable canvas top and hard and soft top variant. The Hard Top version of the car features fabric upholstery and a fibre reinforced plastic top while the Soft Top version has a foldable windscreen and a removable canvas top. The Ambulance version of the car is not for public use and is widely used in hospitals. The interiors of the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy include fabric upholstery in hard top, vanity mirror on left sunvisor, recline and sliding front seats, lockable glove compartment, floor carpet, adjustable head restraints, front package tray, steering lock, front seat walk-in assembly which makes each drive a joyride. In addition to this are the windshield washer and two-speed wiper, hazard warning light, hydraulic clutch in cooling fan, distributer-less ignition and multifunction lever. Maruti Suzuki Gypsy couldn’t conquer the automotive industry owing to its uncomfortable seating and low fuel efficiency
