Mahindra Maxx Maxi Truck Review

Overview:
Mahindra & Mahindra launched the Maxx Maxi Truck in the sub-one tonne category in September 2006. The truck facilitates movement of small cargo to locations in urban areas where big trucks are not allowed. It is also useful in suburban places where the good fuel economy gives it an edge.

Available in a single base variant, the Maxi Truck fits into the vacuum between 3-wheelers and large pick-up trucks. Currently, the Maxi Truck is the most popular vehicle in its category. With a payload capacity of 900 kgs and a maximum cargo loading capacity of 1.5 tonnes, it is the first choice of small truck buyers. The pick-up is designed to meet the required conditions of power, speed and driveability. It can achieve a top speed of 100 km/h.

The manufacturer claims that Maxi truck offers the largest storage capacity in its class. The high mileage and large storage capacity ensures that the owner can make more trips in a day than in any other vehicle of its class.

The Mahindra Maxx Maxi truck is positioned against Tata Ace in the Indian market.

Powertrain and Performance:
The Maxi Truck is powered by 2.5-litre 4-cylinder direct injection diesel engine that generates 63 bhp@3200 rpm and torque of 180 Nm@1500-1800 rpm. It can reach a top speed of 100 km/h without showing any signs of strain. The engine is mated to a KMT 4-speed manual transmission which helps achieve maximum pull from the engine output when carrying a large amount of cargo.

The steering system offers a small turning radius of 6.35 m thereby giving precision handling and easy manoeuvrability on narrow roads. The long wheelbase of 1800 mm and high ground clearance give the vehicle stability.

The Mahindra Maxx Maxi Truck has a payload capacity of 900 kgs and can carry a load of upto 1.5 tonnes. The truck has a gross vehicle weight of 2300 kgs and a kerb weight of 1400 kgs with nearly a full tank.

The vehicle gets a fine tuned rigid leaf spring suspension. Anti-roll bars along with the suspension provide a stable ride. The hydraulic double acting telescopic shock absorbers are effective in taking on bumpy roads.

The top speed of 100 km/h and good acceleration make it an apt vehicle for city roads. Good fuel efficiency is another highlight of the Maxi Truck. It delivers 15 km/l in the city and can reach 18 km/l on highways.

Build and Styling:
The Maxi Truck gets a rugged look with its flaring fenders to the side and a large air dam at the front. Looks that appear to be inspired by the rustic terrain of the country. It comes with a factory-built metal body top that has long life.

It gets traditional headlamps, bulging bumpers with light reflectors and simple taillights. The truck moves on 15-inch steel wheels with heavy duty rims and radial tyres. These wheels are designed to handle heavy loads.

Apart from the strong build and tough appearance, the vehicle is simple and traditional on the inside. The instrumentation cluster is simple - odometer flanked by gauges that read fuel and battery levels. There are buttons to operate the turning indicators and headlights.

A black-grey interior trim helps make the cabin lively. The dashboard and seats get a black finish and the steering wheel and door panel are in grey. The cabin can seat two persons on single seats. The gear shift lever is traditional and provides easy gear shifts.

For safety, both seats are equipped with seat belts. Vacuum assisted brakes offer effective braking.
