The Swift diesel is Maruti's first serious attempt at making a diesel car. The 1.3 litre multijet turbocharged engine, made under a license from Fiat, generates a healthy 75 bhp. This engine is extremely fuel efficient and boasts of fine refinement and performance. The estimated fuel-efficiency is 15.9 km/l for petrol variant and 21.0 km/l for diesel variant. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard. It retains its sharp steering from its petrol siblings despite the extra weight. However, the variant misses out on airbags or climate control, among other features; ABS is optional. The Swift diesel is the most economical buy in the market. The diesel version price starts at Rs 4.73 Lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
