Competition Watchdog CCI Probes Deep Into The Anti-Competitive Malpractices Of Car Makers

10 August, 2012

Following a wad of complaints against international car makers for abusing their dominant position for bigger gains, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has decided to probe deep and expose and eliminate the anti-competitive practices of car makers, if any.

In a written report issued to the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs RPN Singh said, “The CCI, which is a quasi-judicial body, is getting the matter investigated for appropriate action in the matter as per the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002."

Last year, a complaint was lodged against international car makers alleging them of exploiting their dominant market position wrongly by selling auto parts to customers at high prices. The litigant accused them of selling available spare parts through authorized dealers for higher gains.

CCI, which became fully functional in 2009, is a government body licensed with  the power to check anti-competitive agreements and abuse of dominant position, drawn from Sections 3 and 4 of the Competition Act, 2002.
