Volkswagen to roll out compact cars in India

31 July, 2008
Volkswagen is all set to launch a series of compact cars in the Indian car market. Even though it has made a late entry, the car manufacturer has jotted out aggressive plans to strengthen it presence in the Indian car industry.

Mr. Makham Dhalivaal, newly-appointed Managing Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars said, "India is an important market for Volkswagen, though the late entry does not put us into difficulty as we get to learn from the mistakes that other companies has made.”

He also said that the company wants to create brand equity for Volkswagen in India before going in for mass volume segment. We would be adopting a top-down strategy here, which means launching the premium cars first and then getting into the volume segment with our small cars.

Currently, Volkswagen only sells premium cars in the Indian car market. The company has however made an investment of Rs 2400 crore for the Greenfield plant at Chakan in Maharashtra that would provide chief facilities for its forthcoming cars.
