Tata interested in Ferrari

After being sure to grab the luxury brands Jaguar and Land Rover, Ratan Tata has now set his eyes on a stake in Ferrari. An Italian weekly magazine L'Espresso has reported that Ratan Tata wishes to buy a stake in Fiat’s luxury car division Ferrari. He said “I have two passions in my life, cars and aircraft. I have always dreamed of being able to be a fighter pilot. And I confirm the wish to participate in Ferrari’s shareholding.”

He added “Chairman of Fiat and Ferrari Luca di Montezemolo has invited me to look around in Italy because his country offers a lot of opportunities in the design and luxury sectors.” Two Ferrari cars are touring India, to check the feasibility of introducing the highly upscale car on Indian highways. Fiat chairman has said that they do not plan to introduce Ferrari in India for the near future.

Fiat has increased its stake in Ferrari in 2006, after buying back stocks sold to banks. Fiat has a joint venture with Tata Motors for sales and servicing its vehicle in India. The Italian company has plans to bring in seven of its models to India over the next two years. The company will be supported by Tata Motors for the India operations.

Incidentally, Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Motors is a member of board of Fiat Motors. Tata Motors is now just weeks away from signing the Jaguar and Land Rover deal, the two iconic British brands. The company is also gearing up for the pre-Diwali launch of the world cheapest car Nano. The car will be introduced in Europe, before going anywhere else in the world. It is now on display at the Geneva Motor Show, and has attracted large crowds.

It has received rave reviews from several quarter of European auto industry. Nano has created a shift in consumer base for entry level cars.
