Mahindra and Mahindra Not Interested in Fiat Italy Plant

18 December, 2009
Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd isn’t interested in a plant run by Fiat SpA in southern Italy, a spokesman for the Indian vehicle maker said Thursday, following reported comments made by Italy’s economic development minister on a visit to India.

“We are not interested in that plant,” the spokesman told MF-Dow Jones by phone from India.

Italy’s economic development minister Claudio Scajola, who is on an official visit to India, was quoted by the Indian media as saying he would encourage Mahindra and Mahindra and another car maker, Tata Motors Ltd, to take over the unprofitable plant in Sicily.

“We do hope that Indian investors come to Italy,” Mr. Scajola was quoted by the Press Trust of India as saying.

Both Tata and Fiat declined comment.

Fiat plans to stop making cars at the plant known as Termini Imerese after 2011. Its plans have met strong opposition from the government and the unions.
