“We are not interested in that plant,” the spokesman told MF-Dow Jones by phone from India.
Italy’s economic development minister Claudio Scajola, who is on an official visit to India, was quoted by the Indian media as saying he would encourage Mahindra and Mahindra and another car maker,
Tata Motors Ltd, to take over the unprofitable plant in Sicily.
“We do hope that Indian investors come to Italy,” Mr. Scajola was quoted by the Press Trust of India as saying.
Both Tata and
Fiat declined comment.
Fiat plans to stop making cars at the plant known as Termini Imerese after 2011. Its plans have met strong opposition from the government and the unions.
