BMW plans to roll out hybrid to India

Luxury car maker BMW is in line to launch hybrid cars in India very soon. This would probably take place after it makes worldwide entrance of its hybrid cars, which is projected to happen in the next 18 months.

According to BMW Senior Vice-President, Asia Pacific (excluding China) and South Africa, David Panton, "In the next 18 months the hybrid vehicle from BMW will make its international debut. There is a possibility that it could find its way to India."

BMW had a flourishing start to its Indian business enterprise has also heaved its sales target in the country by 40 per cent to 2,800 units this year. BMW has developed hybrid vehicles under its Efficient Dynamics Programme and exhibited Concept X6 Active Hybrid at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show.

BMW India President Peter Kroncshnabl said that the possibility of launching the hybrid vehicle could be within the span of 18-24 months.

Honda Motors being the leader in the Indian market has launched its Honda Civic Hybrid priced at Rs 21.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

David Panton commented that the BMW’s performance in India has been able to exceed its own expectations. In fact we have revised upwards the sales target for 2008 to 2800 from the earlier 2000.

He also added that in the first six months of this year the company has already sold 1563 units as compared to a total of nearly 1,400 units sold last year.
