Japanese company to produce steering for Nano

Tata Motors cheapest car, the Nano, will have steering from Japanese manufacturer. The Japanese component manufacturer Showa Steering, one of the largest maker of automotive steering, is working on a new steering system for the Nano. The new steering will replace the ones manufactured by Delhi based Sona Koya Steering Systems.
The move to opt for Japanese component comes with the Showa Sterring’s offer to produce a more cheaper steering than the Indian manufacturer. The new steering wheel will be strapped on the standard Nano variant.
Though Sona Koyo Steering System, the original supplier had reduced its cost price by 15 percent by re-engineering the product. According to a Tata Motors spokesperson Showa Steering has been asked to design and develop a new steering column and has given a cost target which is lower than the existing steering system. Now the Japanese component maker will supply both hydraulic and electronic power steering, which would be used for the high-end Nano variants.
Tata Motors has been asking component suppliers to re-engineer their prozducts to control the price of Nano—which is being pitched as the cheapest car in the world. There are about 100 vendors contributing to Nano.
