Volvo to start assembling its cars in India

14 March, 2008
Volvo India, which entered the passenger car business in 2007, has stated that it will decide on starting assembly production in India by the end of 2008. Volvo already has a strong presence in India with its bus manufacturing business located in Hoskote, Karnataka. The company is exploring a joint venture option with Ford Motor India to assemble its cars.

Volvo India will hold talks with its parent company located in Sweden to start operations as soon as possible. The company is likely to launch new luxury car models to increase its portfolio in India. The cars are high on styling and safety, but exorbitantly priced due to being complete built imported models.

Volvo has already launched its luxury sedan S80 and its stylish XC90 SUV. The C70 convertible and the XC60 crossover vehicle will ride on Indian roads by mid-2008. The Managing Director of Volvo India, Paul De Voijs, said that “Ford will be involved in talks with Sweden later. So far the talks with Ford are concentrated on collaborations for India operations.”

He clarified that the company will start its assembling operations in India only after the company has analyzed the response to its current products and spent one year experiencing the Indian car market climate.
