Ford Motors, leading US car makers, have decided to roll out their smaller car to the Indian car market by next year. Presently, they have no plans to set up a manufacturing unit for this new car project; therefore the company will be using the existing platform for its production.
According to MD & President of Ford India, Arvind Mathew “It is not possible to start from scratch with the technology and deliver the product in two years and hence the old shared technology concept will be in use.” He emphasized on the fact that this new car will be completely customized for the Indian car buyer.
For the new project, the Ford India engineers will be working with Ford engineers from countries like Germany, England, and Australia. The actual price is not yet declared but it will be lower than the entry level model of Ford Ikon.
This small car will be built on the platform of the existing Ikon or Fiesta customized for a
hatchback. It is also claimed that this new car has been codenamed B402. Ford and
Fiat have signed a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) to produce a small car in Europe, currently there are on plans of getting this car to India. This small car project clearly indicates their strategy to generate sales in the small car segment to stay competitive in the Indian market.
