Tata, Mahindra & Mahindra eye on Hummer

09 June, 2008
After the acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover, Tata Motors is gunning for the high profile General Motors iconic brand, Hummer.

And in this too, like in Jaguar and Land Rover, Tata is facing challenge from Mahindra and Mahindra. Merchant bankers have approached both the company. Industry sources say both companies are interested in the bid.

Hummer is currently owned by US car major General Motors. Hummer or Humvee, stands for the all American SUVs and pick up brand. As it was initially designed for the military in the 80’s, it is associated with US military and macho style in Hollywood.

Earlier this month, General Motors had announced that it was stopping production of its four plants that builds petrol-guzzling pickup trucks and SUV.

The company had announced all possibilities for the sale of Hummer brand was being considered. The Chief Executive Officer of General Motors, Mr. Rick Wagoner said, “all options for the complete sale of Hummer brand are being considered. The complete sale would also include the revamp of product line.”

According to experts, Hummer could be a good deal for both the companies as they have a strong hold on SUV sales as well as global presence.
