BMW riding high on Indian sales

09 April, 2008
The BMW has registered a dip in US sales while achieving a record sale in India during the first quarter of 2008. The increasing demand for luxury cars in India has helped German Luxury car maker BMW to achieve edge over its domestic rival Mercedes-Benz in car sales worldwide.

The BMW sold 351,787 vehicles during the first quarter world wide which is an increase of 5.7 percent from corresponding period in previous year. The record sales are the result of higher demand for the BMW models in countries like India, Russia, China and South Korea.

The biggest increase in demand for BMW cars during the quarter was in India where its sales soared by 800 percent. The higher sales in India, Russia, China and South Korea contributed to 40 percent of the sales while the sales went down in USA.

The biggest market for the BMW cars is USA. The German car maker sold 68,500 vehicles in three month period which is 9.2 percent less than the sales record in the first quarter of 2007.

The rise in sales for BMW mostly comes from the demand for its Mini model which sold about 26,000 cars. The other BMW models contributed to 5.3 percent rise in sales.
