The reduction in market value follows the finance minister’s announcement of excise cuts from 24% to 14 %. The car companies have decided to pass on the benefits to the customers.

Hyundai Motors has announced that it has reduced the prices of the i10, Getz, and Santro. The reduction ranges from Rs 8,730 to Rs 13,278 on its highly popular small car Santro. The newly launched ‘i10’ has car discounts that range from Rs 11,047 to Rs 16324. Another popular small car is the ‘Getz’ that will be priced lesser by Rs 13,169 to Rs 19,419.

Maruti has announced price cuts on six of its models - M800, Omni, Zen, WagonR, Swift Diesel, and Alto. The reduction would range between Rs 6,500 for the M800 to Rs 18,030 for the Swift Diesel (ex-showroom Delhi).

General Motors will also lower its prices in the range of Rs 7,500 to Rs 14,000 on the Spark and U-VA. Tata Motors has announced that it will lower prices on all urban vehicles like its small cars, commercial vehicles, and buses. The company will announce the reduced prices over this week.

Reacting to the price cuts, Mr Arvind Saxena, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Hyundai Motors said that since nearly 80 percent of the cars in India fall under the small car segment, the reduction in prices could boost sales. It will help the industry maintain its sales performance.

General Motors Vice President, Mr P Balendran, said that the reduction will make the small car segment more competitive.
