Mercedes Posts 79 Per Cent Growth in 1st Half of 2010

02 July, 2010
Mercedes-Benz India has announced a sales growth of 79 per cent in terms of the total number of new cars sold in the first six months (January-June) of this year.

“In 2010 January-June period, we sold 2,402 cars, which is a 79 per cent growth over the same period last year,” Mercedes-Benz Managing Director and CEO Wilfried Aulbur said.

Among the top selling models, Mercedes E-class saw a sales growth of 137 per cent, while the M-Class cars witnessed 60 per cent during the period.

In 2009, Mercedes sold a total of 3,250 cars. Aulbur, who was here to launch the E-class coupe and the new state-of-art Interkraft showroom, said that the eastern regions of India registered 100 per cent growth during January to June 2010.

He also mentioned that the company did not want to predict numbers. “We will continue to finish the year with strong double digit growth as the current momentum continues.”

When asked about comparison from other luxury car makers like BMW, Aulbur said that the company was aiming to achieve profitability rather than numbers. He said that the penetration of luxury cars in India is much lesser than other emerging markets like China and Russia.
