The famous five from GM


There are some friends with whom you develop an instant bondage and feel like you have with them for several years. The same happens with cars too. Chevrolet cars from General Motors has been in India for only five years, but the company feels as though it has integrated with Indian business as well known as Maruti already.

Yes, GM’s presence in India can easily be described as fantastic. All the fives years have been eventful, after they entered India in 2003. Chevrolet celebrated its 5th anniversary celebration in March this year. The celebrations were presided by President and Managing Director of General Motors Mr Karl Slym and popular actor and brand ambassador of the car Saif Ali Khan.

Since its introduction to India, GM has offered one Chevrolet car every year. This includes the Chevrolet Optra in July 2003, Tavera in May 2004, Aveo and Optra SRV in 2006 and Aveo-U-VA in December 2006. It launched Spark in 2007 and Captiva in 2008.  The Chevy products have the widest range of prices. The cost of products range from Rs 2.9 lakh to Rs 17.74 lakh. General Motors has set up a facility in Halol Gujarat and now is on verge of opening its second plant in Talegaon near Pune. Both these facilities have been built to international standards.

Commenting the success of the brand, Mr Slym said “Chevrolet has quickly become one of the most admired and preferred car brands in India. The brand and the product have exceeded our expectation. They have met customer demand for performance, attractiveness and quality, which has been supplemented with quality after sale services.

If you look at the last five eventful years, the future does look very bright. I am confident that Chevrolet will continue to drive GM’s success in India.”

As part of the celebration the company has announced the cashless ownership offer, which is the first in Indian industry.

On purchase of a Chevrolet product under the cashless ownership offer – will give you a zero ownership offer that take care of the labour costs, parts of all services, maintenance and running repairs for a period of 3 years or 45,000 kms whichever is first. This unique offer allows the consumer to use the car for a period of three years free of cost.

This offer gives customers a hassle free ownership experience and improves the used car value of Chevrolet brand of vehicles. This has helped improve sales performance.

In the five year calendar of GM, 2007 stands tallest as the company recorded annual growth of 74 % with sales of 60,032 cars. This is several time above the average growth rate of 14 % per year. Encouraged by its performance, General Motors India plans to increase number of dealerships outlets to 125 and support it with 135 service outlets. Currently, the number of dealers stands at 108 outlets and 113 service outlets.

General Motors plan to achieve the growth rate in 2008 as it witnessed in 2007. So far all the things seem to be going in its favor. The company looks al set to charge the leadership charts of Indian, held firmly by Suzuki and Hyundai, so far.
