How to Repair Paint Chips

Colour or car paint is the most attractive aspect of any new car. Everyone have different perspective for buying different colour cars. Some strongly believe that the taste of colour should blend with the personal traits and some feel that car colours should be pleasing enough to attract others. Some car consumers even go for whites and blacks as they feel that elegance and status are displayed by these colours.
Orange is the latest trend in cars these days. Many feel that this colour has a unique ability to express feelings and give a feeling of pride to the driver. Blues and greens are charming, elegant and sporty colours that are liked by all because of the grace and craze that these colours bring along.

Whatever the perspective is, whatever the colour of a car is, if paint chips are present on the car, the value, beauty and appeal of the car fades away.

Repairing paint chips requires maintenance and proper care. It needs lots of effort and little bit of knowledge to repair paint chips of the car and make it look fresh and new.

Here are some tips to repair the paint chips:

  • Before repairing the chip, test the cleaner or paint on the invisible part of the car
  • Verify the paint code with the code mentioned in the car’s owner manual
  • Wash the car well and allow it to dry completely before painting
  • Clean the affected area well with a grease or wax
  • If the affected area is rusted, first treat the rust and then go for painting
  • The best method for repairing paint chips is sanding. Wrap a small piece of sandpaper around a small foam-rubber sanding block. Use the wrapped block to give a touch up paint

  • Paint with light hands. Don’t lean on the car and make a free hand painting
  • Use a toothpick to seal the paint and see to it that the edges don’t fall. If the edges fall, the paint will unevenly spread to other parts where it is not required
  • Ensure that no scratches are formed while using the paint brush or tooth pick
  • Keep the paint box within the reachable area so that time is not wasted and every single chip gets painted effectively
  • Once all the chips are repaired, dab a small amount of alcohol or nail polish on the chip. Use a rag to dab and remove excess of paint and dust present in and around every paint chip
  • Leave it for few minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate and dry the area
  • Another method of repairing paint chip is using a primer
  • Pour the primer into the chip depression using a toothpick. Let the primer flow and spread out in the depression

Wax and glaze can also be used to repair chip. Apply the wax on a piece of cotton or cotton cloth. Use an applicator pad to apply wax and move the pad in one direction only.
