The global car market is packed with millions of car models and thousands of car designers. Car design has always played a significant role in promoting a car and then selling it into the market as it is the first thing that buyers get attracted to.

Over the years, many car designers came into picture but only few have been successful in carving their position in the global automotive map. There are some of the creative designers who have left their footprints on the sand of time with their path breaking concepts.

bullet  Flaminio Bertoni

Flaminio Bertoni was born in 1903 in Masnago, Italy. He was one of the most significant French car designers whose influence on French car designs was astounding. He started his venture as a car designer in 1930 when he joined the Citroen fledgling design department. He always pulled the veil of his imaginations to pour something exciting and creative in order to re-conceptualize the basics of automotive designs. He was closely associated with Citroen but he worked for other car manufacturers as well. He had designed a notable bus with the engine placed above the cabin for Carrozzeria Baroffio.

Citroen Traction Avant was one of the most significant among his creations that introduced new technologies including front wheel drive and the monocoque structure. This car was a masterpiece designed by Flaminio with a remarkable fusion of attractive and outstanding performance. This great designer died in 1964 but is still known for his remarkable introductions in the car industry.

Jean Bugatti was born in 1909 in Cologne, Germany. He was the eldest son of Ettore Buggati who was a renowned car manufacturer. Jean shared his father’s passion for automobiles and was known for frequently testing the prototypes of the company. Sadly, he dies at a very young age in 1939 while he was testing the Type 57 tank-bodied racer. His car got crashed with the tree while he was making attempts to save a drunken bicyclist.

The skilled and talented designer displayed his actual design abilities in 1920. Some of the most remarkable and legendary designs from Jean were the Type 41 Royale, Type 55 Roadster, and Type 57. All these brilliant car designs made Jean one of the most renowned names in the automobile world.

Harley Earl was born in 1893 in California. He is known as the “Father of American Automotive Design”. He is one such name in the industry that has influenced the design and shape of the global car industry. In 1908, Earl joined his father’s business of designing and producing customized parts for automobiles. His father’s firm was known as Earl Automotive Works and was brought by Cadillac dealer Don Lee.

The brilliant designs of Harley Earl were recognized by a Cadillac dealer who then asked Earl to design the 1927 LaSalle that was a part of the General Motor’s portfolio. This became one of the most noteworthy designs of Earl which further pushed General Motor to appoint him as the first director of its Art and Colour Division. This design department was the world’s first design department that was actually credited to the success of LaSalle. Further in 1937, the division became the styling division where Earl had designed the world’s first concept car, the Buick Y-Job. Apart from the LaSalle and the Buick Y-Job, Chevrolet Corvette is another most significant introduction by Earl, the car that is still in production.

bullet Giovanni Michelotti

Giovanni Michelotti was born in 1921 in Turin, Italy. He was one of the most creative designers of sports car and was also known for designing some of the best sedans and truck cabs. At a very young age of 16 he started working as a trainee in the engineering department at Stabilimenti Farina that is a known design and body work factory.

Giovanni made his first move into car designing with an Alfa based car that was ordered by Graf Revelli. Later he started a design studio and introduced many new designs for Vignale, Alleman, Bertone, Ghia, and Ferrari. Some of the most significant of his brilliant designs are the Maserati 5000, the BMW 700, and the Alpine A106. He also introduced the remarkable Triumph Herald that was a four door saloon made in India in 1959. This great and talented designer had a vision that had actually reshaped the destiny of car designing.

William Lyons is one of the most remarkable names in the history of car designing. He is known as the founder of Jaguar but his key talent was car designing. He possessed a great passion for cars and has greatly influenced the present day car designers. The key attributes of his designs were irresistible elegance and excellent beauty.

Williams was born in 1901 in Blackpool, England. He has designed many cars including the whole lot bunch of Jaguar and also the most striking Porsche and Ferrari cars. Some key design trends of William were reflected in the Jaguar Mk V and the Xk 120. Another great introduction by William was the Jaguar XJ that was under production until this millennium. Even today the influence of this great designer is seen in the modern day cars.
