For a long time, driving cars was considered as man's domain in India and women mostly used the public transport or chauffeur - driven cars. Moreover, the cars available in the country earlier were often bulky and difficult to drive. Thus, women generally stayed away from driving cars.

However, the scenario has changed today. Indian women have moved beyond the four walls of their houses. They have witnessed a significant transition from a down-to-earth homemaker to an independent, tech savvy, decision maker. Women have an important place in the Indian society today.

Many factors contributed for the success of women in India including mobility. It is significant to note here that, in this transformation, her mobility, most notably, changed from public to personal.
Car Companies Wooing Women

The Indian car market offers a wide range of cars from high-end luxurious cars to small and cost effective vehicles. All major car manufacturers like the Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki and the Honda design cars to woo women as they are aware of the fact that women also drive car sales today. Today women are joining motor driving schools in large number and are becoming adventurous. As women are increasingly becoming financially independent earning decent income, they are investing them to own their dream cars.

With the advent of some of the light duty and easy to drive cars, women customers are in the spotlight.

The sales figures of Maruti Suzuki cars reveal that 15% of total sales are drive by women. Similarly, about 7% percent of Hyundai’s total car sales come from women.

Moreover, car companies are alluring young professional women through direct advertisements and innovative EMI schemes. The advertisement of Hyundai Santro and Chevrolet Aveo casted Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerjee along with male celebrity Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan to gain females attentions. The Tata Indica Xeta advertisement showing four young girls looking for some fun by the beach had helped double Xeta sales.

Evan many car company like General Motors appoints women engineers and designers for their plants in order to attract women buyers. Many car showrooms also hire women as salespersons to cater to prospective women buyers.

Cars that Matter to Women

Women are focus on the interiors, comfort, and safety while selecting a car. Whereas, men usually stress on performance, torque, modern technical and entertainment features (like Bluetooth, LCD screen, GPS, and other telematics).

Men generally go for black, grey, and red colours, while women like to dabble with colours like purples, pinks, oranges, yellows, blues, greens, and metallic tones. Moreover, women prefer cars which have low running costs and are easy to drive.

Tata Indica Xeta

Tata Indica Xeta is known as a car which 'makes much more car sense'. The five-seater Tata Indica Xeta is available in five variants. The word XETA in its name stands for eXtra fuel Efficiency, Torque Advantage engine. The new face and updated version of the Tata Indica, the Xeta comes with a 1.4-litre diesel engine that generates 53 bhp and the Turbo version churns out 67 bhp. The 1.2-litre Xeta petrol engine drives out 64 bhp and all the variants have 5-speed manual transmission.

Chevrolet Aveo

Aveo is GM’s entry-level sedan under the Chevrolet brand in India. The car has impressed women with high level of comfort, performance, premium build quality, and competitive pricing. It has terrific road presence and comes with two engine options. The 1.6-litre engine produces 101 bhp while the 1.4-litre outputs 93 bhp, both are mated with 5-speed manual gearbox.
