Maruti Suzuki's Approach to Road Safety

Maruti Suzuki's Approach to Road Safety
It is believed that about 100,000 Indians die every year due to road accidents. The peculiar traffic situation, increasing number of on-road vehicles, and poor quality of Indian roads add to the increasing number of accidents.

India should also adopt various techniques and strategies from diverse countries like US, UK, Austria, and Netherlands that have brought down road fatalities through effective enforcement of right road policies. These countries have formed an association of experts from different areas including road construction and design, driver training, vehicle manufacturing, law enforcement, and healthcare. All the experts together have introduced road safety strategies to bring down the rate of road fatality. A similar initiative can be taken with an integrated approach in India.

Common people as well as car manufactures should come forward and take intiatives to arrest the incidences of car accidents. While the current boom in Indian automobile industry is on a height, national and state level councils, traffic police, driver license authorities, university researchers, and domestic car manufacturers have to move hand in hand to encourage road developments and cohesively improve road safety. Maruti being a market leader in India has always been sensitive to road safety. Discussed below are few intiatives taken by Maruti with a view to charge the current scenario of road safety in the country.

Introduction of IDTR

IDTR ( Institute of Driving Training and Research) is a professional facility or a school established by Maruti Suzuki to impart training on driving. Once the learner receives an ITDR certificate, they are eligible to procure a driving license from the regional transport office.

After years of research, Maruti realized that apart from peculiar traffic situation and poor road quality, lack of driving professionalism is also a key factor contributing to high rate of road fatality. With this perception, the company has introduced the first ITDR in 2000 in association with the Delhi Government. This major effort taken by the company marked a milestone in its history with the introduction of world class infrastructure.

Today, Maruti Suzuki has two Institute of Driving Training & Research (IDTR) in Delhi in association with the state transport department of the Delhi Government. With the boom in the industry and increased vehicular congestion, many state governments have realized the need of a facility to train car owners scientifically and thereby promote safe driving.

Inception of Maruti Driving Schools (MDS)

The first Maruti Driving School was introduced in Bangalore in 2005 and thereafter the company had spread its tentacles in various other Indian cities. Today, the entire network of these driving schools are running with a dedicated aim of making Indian roads safer by helping car drivers to become smart and responsible motorists.

Presently, Maruti runs 47 Maruti Driving Schools established in 43 different locations across the country with the state-of-art infrastructure and technologies. It is believed that till date the company has trained and evaluated over 400,000 people across the country, out of which 50% of the learners are women.

Apart from the existing 47 schools run by Maruti, the company is also coming up with new training centres in cities like Raipur, Srinagar, Kolkata, Hubli, New Delhi, Meerut, Salem, Bareilly, Karnal, and Perinthalmana.

Experience of Maruti Driving Schools

The establishment of MDS is completely based on three key elements including theoretical training, practical training, and simulators. The program is structured in a way to train both the beginners and the advanced drivers in various aspects including driving skills, hazard perception, traffic education, emergency handling techniques, basic maintenance of vehicles, fuel efficiency tips, attitudinal training, and first aid administering.

In addition to the world class technologies and advanced simulators, these schools also appoint well-trained and expert drivers to train people and transform them into expert drivers. Special lady instructors have also been appointed in some of the schools to promote women driving and provide them the ease and comfort of learning.

For theoretical learning, Maruti has introduced a well-structured learning programme that is supported by various training aids like audio-visual presentations, traffic sign charts, and films on driving aspects. All these are to impart a high clarity of different driving aspects to all learners.

The practical training involves a series of on-road sessions, mainly on some pre-defined routes so that the learner can gain a comprehensive experience on driving in various traffic situations. The training is given on well-maintained and air conditioned cars with dual control kits. Dual control kits in these cars helps to improve safety of both the learner as well as the trainer. Practical trainings includes all kind of training that cover all possible driving tasks including tight corner turning, moving in tight space, easy maneuverability, highway driving, and handling difficult driving situations.

Further to that simulators are used to train and test various techniques, driving situations, driving skills, and speed-of-response under safe as well as unsafe driving conditions. Simulators are a unique concept in India that defines a stationary car cabin with all car controls. These simulators use computer software to test various driving traits under real life conditions with an inbuilt option of weather conditions, road conditions, and traffic situation.

All the training methods and techniques have been adopted from international standards. They are also taught to drive under different situations like fog, rain, uphill terrain, and night driving. These trainings are first imparted through simulators and then the learners are actually taken for road driving. This helps them gain a better hand experience of driving under different weather conditions.

In addition to the driving skills, Maruti driving schools also help learners gain wisdom on the inner machinery of the cars. The company feels that a car driver should have the basic knowledge of the car machinery, so that in case of an emergency or a breakdown, he or she can make the possible repairs and understand the faults. This is because the expert trainers of the school also teach how to make the basic repairs like changing flat tyres, pouring engine oil, and cooling car engine.

In short, the experience of learning driving through Maruti Driving School is as pleasurable and comfortable as driving Maruti cars.
