India’s Iconic Car Designer

The auto style guru, car magician, wonderman - all these words are less to describe the world famous car designer, Dilip Chhabria. He is the man behind almost all the incredible designer cars in India. He is the only car designer who has represented the country in many renowned and prestigious international car design competitions placing India into the global arena.

With his creativity, innovativeness, and unique auto designs, he has gifted many wonder cars to the car industry. He turned his passion into a career and today he is at the top position in the ladder of success and fame. The phrase ‘Bring me your body and I’ll give you a new soul' once quoted by him truly reflects in his work. His has changed the concept of car customization forever in the Indian car market giving it entirely a new face. The trend initiated by him is flourishing and taking its shape in a big way. His has given new life to many ordinary cars making them a thing to envy.

His creativity and passion for cars is not limited to the Indian boundaries. He is well known among the top designers of the world. The prestigious invitation to design the Aston Martin Vanquish for the James Bond movie 'Die Another Day' depicts his popularity in the international market. This is not just an invitation but a token of his global recognition.

Let’s have a peep into his career background to know more about the India’s design guru. After completing his graduation from the College of Design in California in 70's, he started his career working as an executive with the General Motors. But as he always wanted to do something different and unique, he quit the job and started his own business with a desire to explore his creativity and talent.

In one of his interviews he stated, “General Motors was not the place for me. It was not the kind of work, I was looking for. It was a administrative job with 1,500 designers and designing a whole car all by own was totally out of question. The creativity was limited only up to the hubcaps and handles. It would have taken me another two decades or so to make a mark in the industry. I couldn’t afford that as I was very restless to surpass in the field of designing”.

After leaving General Motors, Mr. Chhabria made up his mind and decided to start from a scratch. Initially, he started with designing accessories as in those days he could not afford a full-fledged auto design studio. His hard work paid the fruit and in the year 1993, he set up his first design centre called Chhabria Designs in Mumbai, India. He was bold enough to take the risk of starting something like this at the age of 40, where people prefer for safety business. But he made a difference and proved the world that if there this will then there is definitely a way.

He got his first break with the Maruti Gypsy project. He revamped the model in such a way that it was hard to believe that it is an Indian make. His industriousness and creativity was recognised and along with the accolades and appreciation he started receiving many orders. From two wheelers to the high-end luxury cars, Chhabria gave his magic touch and turned them into a wonder machine with attractive shapes and forms.

Within a span of decade, the name Chhabria was embedded in the list of renowned car designers. The Chhabria Designs became the name to be appraised and considered as one of the leading automotive design house of India. All the employees working in his firm are personally trained by him. In his words, the company has taught him many things from marketing to finance.

He has designed and customized many cars throughout his career. After designing a Bond car, he again created a sensation in the industry by designing the breathtaking Ambierod which was unveiled at the 2008 Auto Expo, Delhi.

The heavy, boring looking Ambassador is excitingly transformed into a super luxury eye catching Ambierod, which was released with the price tag of Rs 4 Crore. The new Ambierod is enhanced with an automated instrumental panel, satellite navigation system, rear vision camera, three LCD televisions, internet and video conferencing-enabled flat bed and multi-coloured mood lighting. The car is termed as ‘the retro-futuristic car’. Dilip Chhabria is also planning to launch a sports car under his own brand. The Sport car is expected to carry the DNA of a Ferrari or Lamborghini and will cost around Rs 25 Lakh.

DC as he is popularly known is also planning to start a DC College of Designs in Pune by 2009. This educational institution is surely to create a benchmark with the growing passion for the customized cars. The trend is changing, earlier people were satisfied with the cars purchased but now people want to add more to it. It is specially the younger crowd that opts for car customization. So now all car enthusiasts have a common destination to embellish their cars or to study car designing course. The stoppage is none other than the auto style guru’s firm and design studio.
