India is emerging as an IT and outsourcing business hub. This success is attributed mainly to the highly skilled and trained professionals. Indians have mastered the wisdom of IT sector including the hardware, software and other associated knowledge. The global industry is currently relied completely on the Indian sector to outsource their software requirements.
With increasing advancements in the software sector, the IT industry is greatly influencing the other industrial sectors including the Indian car industry. Indian software industry has become the backbone of auto industry. Indian software companies have also become a major source for the world’s auto players’ who are keen to make their car better and safer.
Role of Software in Car Industry
Indian software plays a major role in two main areas of car industry – car designing and car safety.
Car designing is the initial and most important stage of car production. Earlier car manufacturers used to make the entire design plan on paper and every work done was manual. Today, automotive designs have become computerized. Car designing is now a blend of hardware, software and micro-mechanical components. The designing is now done with a high level of specifications of each car part. The hardware and software parts are refined with the use of high-end tools and techniques.
After car designing, cars undergo various levels of productions where again software plays a meaningful role. The installation of car safety features also requires the aid of software. Security in the automotive domain describes various applications like accident alerts, stability control, car alarms, immobilizers, tachographs, and software updates that are controlled by the embedded software system.
Apart from revitalizing the designing and safety standards of cars, digital music players and DVDs also need software for operation. Car manufacturers across the world are also using software for the functioning of Bluetooth, IPods, UPS and other similar accessories.
Indian Cars Using Advanced Software
The designing aspect of software is used by all the Indian car manufacturers. Indian car designers use online tools and software to design the cars. Some of the car manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Rolls Royce have software installed for safety measures in some of their Indian cars.
Most of the cars from Hyundai Motors, Honda Seil India, Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors have fitted airbags in almost all of their new car models. The latest innovation in safety feature is the airbag. This is controlled by the embedded software system in the car. Airbag helps to protect the life of occupants as well as the driver during car accidents.
Honda's new Accord has an intelligent six air bag system that is controlled by software. The installed software makes a decision in mili-seconds as to how much the airbag has to be inflated to cushion driver and other passengers during a collision. The software also decides as to which airbag has to inflate among the six. To cushion the driver, frontal airbags are inflated and to cushion rear passengers side airbags are used.
Top-end electric car, the Maini Reva, also has two computers installed in the car. Both the computers are used to monitor the production of electric energy required to run the car.
Hyundai Motors have also signed an agreement with Microsoft to build music and information system in future cars.
Global Move - Bundling of Software and Cars
Every car manufacturer wants to make their car models iconic. Many car manufacturers across the globe have teamed up with various software companies to offer better, safer and interesting car models to their customers.
Apple has signed an agreement with the three car manufacturers – Ford, General Motors, and Mazda. Apple will help these car companies to install iPod connections in most of their future cars.
The BMW models are equipped with monitors in the front that receive signals in form of images beamed by cameras placed behind the car. The images formed on the monitor gives a clear description to the driver about the space behind. This makes it easy for the driver to navigate easily and park the car.
KPIT Cummins has developed a software that helps to control the flow of oil to the steering wheel system. It also helps in easy navigation of the car.
Bosch, a software company based in Bangalore has developed a software that prevents children from placing their fingers while the windows are rolling down.
Software Companies Supporting the Car Industry
The Microsoft, KPIT Cummins, Apple, Bosch, and the Tata Elxsi are some of the software companies that have a greater presence in the car industry. All these companies in association with car manufacturers are working to roll out elite car models with latest and innovative software applications.
Indian software majors are in the process to develop software applications that will prevent car accidents. It is believed that currently around 70,000 lives are snuffed out annually due to car accidents. The future software applications are expected to reduce the number of on-road fatalities.
