City Driving Tips for Safe Drive

Driving in the city is a big pain especially during high traffic hours. It’s really a big challenge to drive the car in between congested roads and through unfamiliar destination. In India there is no end to clogged expressways, countless red lights, never ending construction and unknown long roads.

All this adds to frustration and annoyance. There’s lot a driver can do to make city driving easier. Here are some good city driving tips that can also help to increase safety on high traffic roads.

bullet Be Alert While Driving

Cities usually have varieties of traffic including trucks, vehicles, cars, scooters and pedestrians. Be alert and watch out all sides before taking any turn in between the traffic. Be more cautious and alert at the junction because there the automotives move from different junctions together. Drive cautiously.

bullet New Driver – Be Careful

Driving becomes exponentially difficult if the driver is new or unfamiliar with the roads. It becomes difficult to read the signs and the sign boards that guide the driver to a known destination. Sometimes, one road divides to a number of roads mainly at a junction. So, the driver has to be more alert and vigilant while driving under such circumstances.

bullet Go for Small Cars

If the car is required for daily commuting from office to home and vice versa then a small car will do wonders. Any time in between the normal business hours, roads are always jammed with a variety of automotives. It is always advisable to carry a small car rather than carrying a huge sedan or SUV that really makes the drive tough under such a situation. The paid parking at several places is also restricted to park compact and small cars.

bullet Automatic Transmission Works

Cars with manual-transmission are better to drive but in high traffic areas automatic transmission works better. Currently, we have very few automatic cars in India. Some known among them are Hyundai Santro, Hyundai i10, Maruti Zen and the proposed Tata Nano. In heavy traffic cities it is advisable to drive an automatic car.

bullet Consider the Mileage

In city driving when the driver is sure that the car cannot be driven on a high speed, it is advisable to keep the speed constant. Speeding up the car and then slowing down immediately reduces car mileage. Frequent start and pause of the car damages both the car and fuel economy. Go lightly on the accelerator and save on fuel.

bullet Stick to a Lane

Don’t keep on changing lanes when driving a car in heavy traffic. Changing lanes can be risky and might cause an accident.  The driver can reach his destination earlier but the possibility of collision becomes higher.

bullet Install Safety Features

Its better to install safety features whatever the case is. In city driving features like car alarm, anti-theft device, anti-lock brakes and starter disable switch helps to enhance car safety during city drive and also helps to prevent car theft when the car is parked in places with massive number of cars.

Driving in the city is little risky. But if the driver is careful and alert than he/she can keep themselves as well as other commuters away from unnecessary trouble.
