Reva is India's first electric car designed and produced by RECC (Reva Electric Car Company) founded by Chetan Kumar Maini. The founder is believed to be a self-confessed 'car guy' who believed that his small little electric car that could change the world's outlook towards an electric vehicle.
The car meets the highest standards of quality, technology, and safety. In terms of safety, the Reva has met the safety standards both in the Indian as well as the international markets. It is exempt from most European crash test rules because of its low weight and outstanding power.
The UK Department also found the Reva to be an extremely safe car with various proven conditions. Although the first variant of the Reva known as Reva G-Wiz was not that safe but other variants launched after the G-Wiz met all the safety standards. The G-Wiz was put on a safety crash test and the UK Department found serious safety concerns after the car was crashed at 56 km/h into a deformable barrier on 24 April 2007. Likewise, the renowned Top Gear auto magazine also commissioned a test that revealed that the Reva occupants would suffer life-threatening injuries in a 64 km/h crash.
Immediately after that Maini realized that need for better and advanced safety features and the Reva-i was introduced. The new variant comprises a host of advanced safety features like the front disk brakes, a collapsible steering column, and a much revised and reinforced chassis. The car then successfully cleared the crash test conducted by the
ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India).
The launch of the Reva-i gave the
electric car company an opportunity to claim an excellent safety record. It is believed that in a usage of over 40 million kilometer there has not been a single serious injury or fatality. Further to that, the car has a low weight, limited range, and limited top speed and this is why it is mostly driven in slow urban traffic. This further enhances the safety of the car especially on congested city roads. It is also believed that the 'Made in India' electric car Reva possesses an exceptional safety record in over 13 countries across the globe.
Reva-i is structured with a steel space frame that envelopes the car passengers in case of an accident. The steel structure is strong and rigid to divert the maximum possible impact energy released during an accident. In addition, the car is also provided with dent/scratch proof ABS body panels that increase the capacity of the car to absorb more impact energy without causing any damage to the body panels. The large doors are also fitted with side impact beams that further increase passenger's safety against side impact.
