Mileage tag on car-in near future

A mileage tag on the car that you wish to buy! Sounds amazing, but it is true. If the government has its way, then cars will come with a fuel efficiency tag also (apart from price tag).

Most car buyers agree that they do not know the exact mileage figures until they drive it themselves for few months after purchasing it. This is because the car manufacturers do not give mileage information.

Some other car manufactures try to show that they give mileage figures, which is actually very confusing. In fact they show some jumbled numbers with a prefix or suffix with asterix. You may think that the ‘conditions’ covers your city as well. You may be wrong!

The cars are usually tested in far of Europe or African countries, but not in Indian urban road conditions. So when you buy a car you will always notice a difference in your experience and those on the labels.

But that could change now with the government’s new rule on fuel efficiency. The government will test all cars under newly formed norms. Industry experts say that if the norms are implemented strictly then at-least 60 per cent of car in showrooms today will be off the shelf.

Fuel efficiency standards would be like certificates which will guarantee you a fixed range of kilometers per liter of fuel. The certificates will be for both petrol and diesel. The mileage standards will be high and manufacturer developing fuel guzzlers will be penalized with not only labels but with a possibility to withdraw car from market altogether.

Fuel efficiency exercise is mandatory in USA, Japan, UK and many other western European countries. From the block of emerging economies China has already brought in these norms and now India is bringing such laws.

According to an estimate, even if the fuel efficiency is improved by half from the current mileage, it will save the government $36 billion by 2030, in all sectors. A mandatory fuel efficiency norm will also save consumer’s money.

It had to be made mandatory because the government failed to get the same information voluntarily from car manufactures. It was learnt that the government had given time to car manufactures for voluntarily disclosure of information on fuel efficiency. None of the car manufacturers came forward to give out the exact mileage statistics of their famed cars to consumers.

But with the fuel efficiency norm in place, it could turn the tables on car manufactures. They will be forced to commit themselves to disclosing this information. It is a progressive move by the government to bring in useful changes in the industry. Indian can no longer be subjected to buy fuel guzzlers with big names. These cars are being phased out in several countries and can be easily bypassed for more fuel efficient cars.
