The country has now got a number of car brands ranging from the Maruti Suzuki, which has an Indian origin, to BMW and Benz that is topping the sale in the Indian luxury car market. But there was a time in the Indian automobile history where there were no cars except for the Hindustan Motors. The new car buyers, who are not happy with the wide range of cars available, will not be able to imagine about a choiceless car industry. Founded in 1942, the company is a part of the Birla Technical Services. The company brought out HM Ambassador, a car that was a perfect companion for Indian roads. The car is based on Morris Oxford, and it still remains as the classic and favourite choice of the Indian politicians and political leaders. The car is also used as taxis throughout the country. It is imaginable how a decent people mover soon became a heart throb for many in India and abroad. Hindustan Motors also manufactured the Contessa, a four-door sedan, also a favourite ride of the Neta log. HM had earlier tied up with General Motors for a 50:50 joint venture before General Motors bought itself out of the partnership and went solo under the name of General Motors India. HM later partnered with Mitsubishi Motors for manufacturing variants of Lancer and Pajero and now is successful entity in India. Although it does not have its past glory, the company still remains to a major car manufacturer of India.

Cadillac American is a brand name that is owned by General Motors. The car though has an international market; its main point of business interests lies in North America. This American company has to a large extent helped in the growth of General Motors from an American car manufacturer to a major player in the global car market. Founded in 1902, the company, in less than seven year’s time grew into a major luxury carmaker of the country. The company never looked back after it was taken over by GM in 1909. The company was a pioneer in integrating an electrical system that will enable lighting, starting, and ignition which is a technological revolution in its own might. The V8 engine, known as the overhead valve, which has set the standard for the American automobile industry, is among the three engines the company has developed. The fibre optic warning system for failed light bulbs, climate control system, and airbags are features which the Cadillac had introduced in its cars long time back. The company had always been very futuristic in using techniques and designs.

Porsche is Germany’s finest luxury car manufacturer. The company during its initial stages was offering motor vehicle consultation and development work. But very soon the German government asked the company to design a car for the public and it saw the birth of Volkswagen Beetle, a very popular car design of all times. And in 1939, Porsche manufactured car under its name, Porsche 64. But the Porsche car got launched officially in June 1948 with the launch of a two seater, Porsche 356. Gaining all the encouragement and strength it needs from the model, Porsche further started to widen its portfolio. The company started developing a new model 901 in 1959, but after it got launched in 1964 the French carmaker Peugeot came up with a claim for the name and finally Porsche changed the name of Porsche 901 to Porsche 911. The 911 was a big hit globally and in Germany. Carrera Abarth was the first car that marked the beginning of Spyder generation in Porsche. This aluminium bodied car was built on the chassis of the Porsche 356B. The Spyders and 911 gave new life to the Porsche cars. Even though there were rumours that the Porsche would merge with Daimler-Benz, the merger never happened and till date Porsche is a sports car company that stands by its own right. Boxter and Cayman sports cars and Cayenne sports utility vehicles and the latest Panamera sedan are the successful models from Porsche.
