10 Lesser Known Indian Traffic Rules

So, we all have taken our driving lessons and learnt the fundamentals of the Indian traffic rules and regulations. Like if you are driving without a valid license, you will be fined if you are unfortunate enough to be caught by a traffic cop. And then there are instances when you get fined for over speeding within the city limits. India is a land of diversity and you get a whole new perspective on diversity when you consider the various traffic rules that are rampant among the four metropolitan cities across India.

Here we bring to your awareness a list of some very inconspicuous traffic rules from across the country.

bullet 1. Video in the Dashboard of Your Vehicle

Equip your car's dashboard with a video player or a TV and you would be violating a traffic rule in Mumbai. Quite a contrast is the fact that Mumbai is the entertainment capital of India. If you are caught by the cops while indulging your visual senses, you will have to pay a fine of Rs 100.

bullet 2. Mentally or Physically Challenged Driver

Now this rule pops up in Chennai. If you are driving around Chennai and you suffer from any kind of mental or physical challenge, your driving challenges can take a backseat for the time being, you will be fined because the city traffic police consider it to be a violation of the traffic rules. If the cops catch you, then you will have to rescue yourself with a penalty of Rs 200. But a finer mystery in this whole scenario is: how do the cops decide about the mental or the physical challenge and how do they enforce this rule?

bullet 3. Mind Your Parking Manners

This is for the people who have no command over parking expertise. While many people may not know about the existence of this traffic rule, it does its round in almost all the metros. So next time, don't just curse the fool who is obstructing your exit, report it to the traffic police and you may grin your way out when he shells out at least hundred rupees.

bullet 4. Vehicle on Idle

Mumbai seems to be getting really innovative, as the world moves towards a greener tomorrow. And here is an example of Mumbai's initiatives: leave your vehicle idle with the engine on and you will be fined. You may say that with the fuel prices going up, how many people leave the engine on while idling. But we can assure you that there are quite a few lazy ones who find it a mammoth task to switch of the ignition on traffic signals.

bullet 5. Driving Without a Horn

You must not complain about the state of honking and noise pollution on the roads of Delhi. Here is the explanation: if you are driving a car that does not have a functional horn, which acts like a safety device for warning others on the road, you are violating a traffic rule and liable for a fine of Rs 100.

bullet 6. First Aid First

Well if you happen to be Chennai or even Kolkata, for that matter, do not drive around without a first aid box in your car. Because if you fail to give first aid to a passenger in case of a casualty, you can be imprisoned for three months or you may have to pay a fine up to Rs 300 or both.

bullet 7. Stationed at a Public Place

In Kolkata, you may be fined if you allow your vehicle to remain stationary at a public place. The penalty is a fine of Rs 100. Well, we are not being too fussy about traffic intricacies, but is it too much to ask the traffic police to specify the public places as bus stops or taxi stands?

bullet 8. Smoking Inside the Car

Everyone knows that smoking kills, but here is another piece of fact attached to smoking, especially if you happen to live in the national capital. Unaware as you might be, but while you are smoking inside your car, you are violating a traffic rule and can be fined Rs 100.

bullet 9. Borrowing a Car

Borrow your friends' car without his/ her express consent, and you might be courting disaster. Yes, it is one of the traffic rules in Chennai, a violation of which may slap you with a penalty of up to Rs 500 or imprisonment up to three months or both.
