The easy retreat in summer are the hills, be it Himalayas, or Western Ghats or Vindhya or any other hilly regions. There are many beautiful hill stations that can be good holiday places for families during summer. SUV’s are popular vehicles for drive through the mountains. Particularly in India Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Safari score more points that any other SUV.

Taking your car out, filled with all the family goodies and games can be fun. But driving through hilly regions requires some amount of preparation. The first time drivers on hilly regions can use some of the tips given here.

Climbing through hilly region can be tedious for both the driver and the car. Car breakdown is a frequent complaint on these regions. The vehicle undergoes a lot of strain when ascending or descending hills or mountains. Hence it is best to get your car completely checked and necessary repair made, while climbing the hilly region. It is essential to keep the car in good working condition.

Give special attention to the functioning of car brakes. Check it twice to make sure that all is well with brakes. Fill in necessary brake fluid for the journey. Even if you have a small doubt in mind about its quality, it is best to repair it and proceed further.

While driving, keep a safe distance from the vehicles ahead of you, especially when ascending. You have to be careful to maintain a safe distance when you are stuck in a traffic jam on a hilly region. The vehicle ahead may loose control and roll back.

When you are in the block and stuck in a long line of vehicle on a hairpin curves, it is best to use hand brakes instead of the clutch. Ensure that you keep your foot away from the clutch pedal. Switch on the emergency taillights for added security.

Overheating of engine is a common problem in mountainous trip. It is best to keep water and necessary tool kit ready with you for emergencies. Let the vehicle cool down before you proceed. Never open the radiator cap when the vehicle is overheated. You could get burned if you try to open it before the engine has cooled down completely. Also do not add cold water to an overheated engine. This could cause damages within the engine compartment, stalling your journey completely.

Avoid using the half-clutch function frequently. This could damage the clutch plate and leave you stranded mid way. If you find that the vehicle is not responding to clutch operation, pull over to the side, let the vehicle cool down and then start your journey.

Keeps the rearview mirror positioned in such a way that it gives you a clear view of the vehicles trailing you. Fit a new mirror if required to get a clear view.

It is also best if you keep two spare tyres for a long journey. Hilly regions can test your driving skill to the hilt. Make sure you have learnt the basics of changing tyres and making small repairs if necessary. All these skills could come handy in emergencies. Also keep lots of food and water for yourself.
