Car industry has seen a good growth in recent years until it is paralysed by the current economic meltdown. In one hand when the industry has revolutionized the concept of commuting, on the other hand it has contributed to the rising environmental pollution.
Automobile emission is the primary pollutant responsible for increasing the air pollution level. These comprises a large amount of toxic gases including hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen. Combustion engine emits most of the green house gases that accumulates in the atmosphere further contributing to global warming.
With the rising concern of environmental pollution, many car manufacturers has come up with 'green cars' that runs on alternative fuels hence reducing the burden of air pollution on the atmosphere. Some of the leading car players have rolled out eco-friendly cars like electric cars, LPG, CNG kit fitted cars and hybrid cars. But still these models are yet to gain buyers favouritism compared to petrol and diesel fueled cars. The easy availability of fuel (petrol and diesel) station than LPG and CNG refill stations has faded the popularity of LPG & CNG cars. The electric cars too have certain disadvantages that supports the reason for their limited customers.
Electric cars run on battery that needs electricity to recharge. Presently, in India none of the fuel stations provide the facility to recharge car battery unlike in other leading nations. India's sole hybrid car, the
Honda Civic Hybrid, has also failed to gather much consumers due to its high price and unawareness of the technology among the buyers.
But why to blame only the absence of alternative fueled cars. Conventional car owners can bring a change in the pollution scenario if they use their car with a little care and maintenance.
