The Classes within Mercedes Benz - Part 2

Mercedes-Benz, a division of Daimler AG, is one of the most famous German automobile manufacturers. The origin of the automobile in many historical books takes us back to Carl Benz and this great personality is a founder of Mercedes-Benz along with Gottlieb Daimler. The company's long association with innovation, quality and style has led to the creation of a whole lot of classes of first class cars by Mercedes-Benz. Carazoo.com continues from where it had left last in this part of various classes of Mercedes Benz.

bullet The GLK-Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLK, codenamed X204, is a compact luxury crossover released after its public debut at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show. The GLK-Class was launched in 2008 and is built in Bremen, Germany. Its design is heavily influenced by the C-Class. The GLK was presented for the first time in 2008 in Detroit under the form of the Mercedes-Benz Vision GLK Freeside concept. MBUSA partnered with four tuners to develop custom designs for the newly released GLK for the 2008 SEMA show in Las Vegas. Boulevard Customs, Brabus, RENNtech and Legendary Motorcar Company were the four lucky tuners who got the unique opportunity to design their vision. The GLK-Class shares the C-Class W204 platform, and production plans continued after the termination of the similar Smart Formore.

bullet The M-Class

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class is a luxury mid-size SUV. It was first offered in 1997 as a 1998 model. The M-Class has seen great success in the United States and Mexico as far as sales is concerned. As for the size, it is positioned between the smaller GLK-Class and the larger GL-Class, with which it shares platforms. Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria too built the M-Class during the years 1999 to 2002. It was built for the European market at the time, until it moved to part of the U.S. market.

bullet The R-Class

The R-Class is a multi-purpose vehicle offered by Daimler AG in 2006 under the Mercedes-Benz brand. The R-Class is the first full-sized MPV ever produced by Mercedes. First seen at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show as the Vision Grand Sports Tourer concept, the final production automobile was shown at the 2005 New York International Auto Show. The R-Class is built on the W251 chassis. It is priced between the M-Class and the GL-Class. Mercedes initially marketed the MPV as a Sports Cruiser and later as a Family Tourer. BlueTec diesel engines were introduced in the 2009 models in few markets. Other markets made use of the Mercedes BlueEFFICIENCY technology.

bullet The S-Class

The second largest fleet of sedans produced by Mercedes Benz is the S-Class series. The series has been around since the 1950s and enjoys the title of being the world's best-selling luxury flagship sedan. Being the leading model in the Mercedes' inventory, the S-Class has debuted many of its newest innovations like the drivetrain technology, interior features, and safety systems like the first seatbelt posers. The name "S-Class" comes from the German "Sonderklasse". It means "special class" or "in a class of its own". The "S-Class" designation was first officially applied only in 1973 when the W116 model line made its debut. Five generations of S-Class sedans have been developed thereafter.

bullet SL-Class

The roadsters produced by Mercedes-Benz since the year 1954 have been known as the SL-Class. SL stands for the German Sport Leicht or Sport Light in English. The SL term was first applied to the gullwing model 300SL Gullwing. The car was also named after its upward-opening or gullwing doors. The SL-Class is popular as one of the world's safest sports vehicles.

bullet SLK-Class

The compact roadsters R170 and R171 produced by Mercedes-Benz in two generations since 1997 constitute the SLK-Class. As one of the earliest modern retractable hardtop convertibles, the SLK-Class followed the 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT Spyder and paved the way for other retractable hardtops like the Peugeot 206cc, Pontiac G6, Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, Lexus SC and the Chrysler Sebring. S, L, and K in the name stand for the German words Sportlich, Leicht und Kurz. This name comes from Mercedes' design mission to produce a roadster that's sporty, light and short.

bullet SLS-Class

The magnificent grand tourer manufactured by Mercedes-Benz AMG as a replacement for the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is known as the SLS-Class. This car is the first to be designed in-house by AMG and is more popular as the spiritual successor to the 300SL Gullwing. The SLS-Class made its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. Sales of the vehicle, however, haven't begun. Europe will probably start selling the SLS by mid 2010 and the U.S. may see sales of the car by June next year. No news of the car making its debut in the Indian car market is known as of now. The upcoming PlayStation 3 racing game Gran Turismo 5 will feature the SLS-Class as the cover car. The SLS AMG has also served as the official 2010 Formula One safety car.
