Fiat's Approach to Environmental Protection
Car manufacturers are now going green to preserve the environment and maintain the ecological balance. Many car manufacturers have taken significant initiative to reduce automotive emissions and improve environmental conditions.
In response to the growing awareness of eco-concerns, Fiat has taken concrete steps within the reach of the company to achieve this important goal. Fiat has till date introduced many fuel-efficient cars and two Euro 5 ready engines. Fiat’s commitment to reduce environmental pollution has also resulted in a decision to introduce Euro 5 engines on the majority of its cars by 2009.

Explained below are some of the approaches made by Fiat to preserve environment:
EcoDrive
EcoDrive is a benchmark introduction made by Fiat that helps drivers analyze their driving style and understand the impact of their driving style on fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. This innovation was launched by Fiat at the Paris Auto Show 2008.
The system works with the help of a USB memory stick that is plugged into the dashboard of the car. When the USB is plugged the EcoDrive records the detailed information about the vehicle and the style it is being driven by the driver. This recorded information is then uploaded on to a computer. Once it is uploaded, the computer analyzes the driving style and then provides suggestions and understanding of how the driver can improve vehicle efficiency and driving method that in turn will help them preserve fuel as well as the environment.
Fiat Eco-Drive offers real benefits to car owners and at present the technology is enjoyed by drivers in Europe. The technology also helps them be a part of the community that shares an eco-aware driving ethic.

Advanced Diesel and Petrol Technology
Fiat towards its commitment to preserve the environment introduced the MultiJet engine technology. Today almost all the diesel cars are equipped with the advanced diesel technology that helps to improve performance and fuel efficiency.
Furthermore, Fiat is also downsizing its engines by adding a new generation turbocharger with smaller engines. This is mainly done to produce comparatively high performance as well as lower consumption and emissions. The availability of the turbocharger actually helps to increase peak torque that is further available at a much lower engine speed. With this, it offers excellent elasticity and prompts responses when compared to conventional aspirated engine.
Fiat has also introduced the new twin-cylinder engine fitted with the Multi-air system that helps to lower fuel consumption and also reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The new engine technology is compliant to Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards.

Alternative Fuel Technology
Fiat has also introduced an alternative fuel technology that focuses on the usage of natural gas for engine propulsion. The usage of this fuel will further help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and solve the problem of pollution in built-up areas. Fiat is the leading manufacturer in this technology and is also the first car manufacturer to offer a ‘Natural Power’ range of eco-friendly dual fuel methane-petrol vehicles. This range of eco-friendly cars meets the mobility needs of many car buyers across the globe.
Vegetable Based Fuel
Fiat also pioneers the technology that focus on vegetable-based fuels. Almost 95% of the total numbers of cars marketed by Fiat in Brazil are equipped with the Flex Fuel system that enables the engine to run on variable mixtures of pure bio-ethanol and gasohol. Both the fuels are filled in the same fuel tank and then the engine software recognizes the composition of the mixture. Based on the composition the engine automatically modifies the injection and ignition parameters. The fuel technology works on the same principle as the conventional fuel. The key advantage of using ethanol is the fact that it is a renewable source of energy and helps to lower emission of greenhouse gases. The reason why ethanol reduces greenhouse emissions is that the biomass of vegetable origin re-absorbs the emitted carbon dioxide.
Environment Management System
The commitment to environment made by Fiat is evident at all levels of car manufacturing. The company has cleaner manufacturing facilities that is certified by ISO 14001 standards. Moreover, an effective Environmental Management System monitors every stage of car production and guarantees constant improvement of the environmental impact of all manufacturing processes. The company has also launched a continuous improvement programme in the manufacturing facility to ensure high standards of excellence foreseen by the world class manufacturing system.
Recyclability
Introduction of recyclable cars is another significant approach taken by Fiat to preserve environment and maintain the ecological balance. All the cars produced by Fiat are about 95% recyclable and this reduces the impact of vehicles on the environment. Fiat has also reduced the use of PVC and thermo-setting polymers, and considerably increased the quantity of recyclable materials in the production of cars. This has made a significant contribution to the re-utilization of materials that have been used for manufacturing cars.
