On the other hand, the Indian government is showing interest in hydrogen cars. In fact, the government has planned millions of hydrogen-powered cars that are to be launched by 2020. Till date, no hydrogen-powered cars have been introduced into the Indian market, but plans are in the pipeline. India has long ventured into the hydrogen energy technologies, which is likely to be the reason why hydrogen-powered cars are preferred over the hybrids.
The other Alternative fuel car that we have in India is the electric car. Currently, Maini Reva is the only
electric car maker in India. The Maini Reva Electric Car Company came into being back in 1994. It was set up as a joint venture with Maini Group of Bangalore and AEV LLC of California. It will soon have competition with Bavina Industries which also produced electric cars. Bavina cars will hit Indian roads in 2011.
The REVAi debuted in India in 2001 and it has received certification from Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and EEC (European Economic Community), which has led to the export of Reva's to UK as the G-Wiz. The REVAi is a hatchback that runs on lead-acid batteries with maximum speeds of 80 km/h. The REVA L-ion has lithium-ion batteries and a roof solar panel and run 120 km in a single charge.
The Reva G-Wiz is one of the most affordable cars to buy and to use in the United Kingdom. The Power Shift (An American national youth summit in Washington, D.C. focused on global warming and climate change policy organized by the Energy Action Coalition. The first conference was held November 2-5, 2007, and the second occurred from February 27 to March 2, 2009. ) recognized it as the most energy-efficient car in the industry. The Reva G-Wiz has been noted in UK, Germany, Switzerland, Nepal, Austria, Cyprus, Italy, Malta, Spain, Ireland, Japan, Sri Lanka, and Norway. But, the car has not yet received approval to enter the United States.
Till now in India, production of clean cars with hybrid and electric drive trains are limited to some car manufacturers. India can depend on its technology and manufacturing base. This will definitely push many carmakers to manufacture their own clean cars.
Presently, the priorities of the Indian car industry are to made affordable and eco-friendly cars for its customers as well as to plan for extensive growth in the future.
