Car Noises: Indication of Car Problems

Noise refers to unwanted sound that is often the cause of sound pollution. Car noise is something that not only causes noise pollution but also indicates glitches in the car machinery. Knocking, Clatter Rattling all these unusual sound alarms a driver of the defective drivetrain. Thus car communicate with a driver with its various bizarre sounds. So it is important to understand them to have a hassle free car ownership. Let’s investigate some of the common noises connected with a car that are prior indications of any malfunction in a car.

bullet Backfiring

It’s a common sound which is often experience by a car owner. It is an explosion produced by a running internal combustion engine, it occurs in the intake or exhaust system rather than inside the combustion chamber. Backfire in an automobile engine typically results from various breakdown related to the air/fuel ratio. Unregulated and poor engine timing, improper wiring in the ignition, low fuel pressure, clogged fuel filters, weak fuel pumps, and a damaged catalytic converter are often the causes of backfiring.

bullet Knocking

This noise is produced in spark-ignition internal combustion engines when combustion of the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder starts off incorrectly in response to ignition by the spark plug. It can occur due to different reasons; type of fuel used can to one of the reasons. Therefore, fuel should be used compatible to the compression ratio of an engine. Knocking may also arise due to any change made in the engine. The relationship between the rotation of the camshaft and the crankshaft is of an important factor here. Camshaft is an apparatus often used in piston engines to operate valves. Worn camshaft is another reason for knocking, it results mistiming and leads to knocking. Allow the car engine to warm up before driving and keep away from accelerating the engine hard when it's cold to avoid knocking.

bullet Clatter

Clatter is another kind of noise usually connected with automobiles. The main causes for the clattering sound are insufficient and low grade engine oil, aged out or badly adjusted valves, incorrectly tensioned camshaft drive belt, engine overheating, and wrong ignition timing. In order to save money many people uses low grade engine oils which cause engine overheating. Overheating may occur due to inability of the cooling system to absorb, transport, and dissipate heat. A low coolant level, a coolant leak, poor heat conductivity, a defective thermostat that doesn't open, poor airflow through the radiator, a slipping fan clutch, an inoperative electric cooling fan, a collapsed lower radiator hose, an eroded or loose water pump impeller, or even a defective radiator cap can lead to engine overheating. The main solution is to use a higher grade quality engine oil and fuel and have a proper check-up done at regular interval.

bullet Rattling

Rattling is another form of sound often occurs in cars. Some of the primary reason for the occurrence of rattling is old engine rubber mounts. A loose inner ball joints or torn rubber in the Rack & Pinion steering system due to dust and foreign particles in moving parts leads to rattling. It is necessary to tune or service the engine at to avoid rattling.

Additionally, hiss is also a sound that frequently comes out of the engine. It may be due to the leak from coolant or air vacuum hoses. In this condition, get it checked by a mechanic. Screeches and moans of engines are the other kinds of noises which are found in cars. It’s due to slipping auxiliary drive/fan belt, low level of power steering fluid and the slipping of power steering belt. Checking and adjusting the belt and replacing the worn-out part can arrest this problem. Power steering fluid provide good control to cars on road and using good quality fluids helps achieve better control while driving.

Rasping is a kind of noise which occurs due to a blown exhaust and the only remedy is to check the exhaust and fix it. It’s worth mentioning that defective braking components also create noise. Loose hub cap also causes unwanted and irritating sounds while driving. It is advisable to check the hub cap and tighten it to overcome this problem. Loose nuts and bolts on the chassis often give rise to annoying noises.

Overall, proper maintenance and regular check up of a car help it to stay tuned and in a healthy condition. It is better to keep the car in well maintained condition before it starts speaking of its painful and miserable condition.
