Punjab continues to be an enigma for luxury car manufacturer who have a base in India. The Punjabis love for Mercedes-Benz is now well documented as thousands have flown of the shelf since the dealer opened shop in Chandigarh.
BMW, Volvo, Skoda, Honda and Fiat also have their showrooms in Punjab. The cars struggle for both for roads space and larger market share. Punjab holds the record for purchasing the highest number of Mercedes in the country. BMW 3-series, 5-series are a great craze among the youth there.
As cars sell fast in this state, the government statistical figures look gloomy. The income from agricultural products is also getting lesser by the day. The government report states that Punjab has slipped further down from 5th position in terms of per capital income in the last couple of years. Several government institutions, boards and corporation are on the verge of bankruptcy. Many are struggling to pay salaries to pay their staff. Punjab was once considered as wheat basket of India and the state farmers were the richest as compared to farmers in other states.
It is now turning into industrial and property hubs. The main factor in the overall rise in sales of luxury cars is the real estate boom. People who have sold their lands are going for luxury cars. Luxury cars have also become the choicest gifts for bridegrooms during marriages. Another assumption by the experts is that money sent by NRI relatives is contributing immensely to pockets of people. The amount of disposable income has risen considerably. As dollars and pounds are flowing down to Punjab people here are looking for ways to spend them. One of the first choice is owing a cars. The next biggest factor is the easy availability of bank credit. It is learnt that farms loans have been diverted towards luxury cars. While real estate boom has helped them sustain the loan repayment capacity.
The luxury car market is growing at a breathtaking speed of 25 percent per year. The luxury car business has put the small cars to shame in the state. Owing a Mercedes or BMW is a symbol of their lifestyle.
The luxury car manufacturers are smiling as people queue up to their showroom and even place booking in advance. They are ready to wait for month to take delivery of the car, but can’t compromise for less. Ofcourse the Punjabis are a hardworking lot.
