Improve SUV Safety

Driving an SUV is quite complex when compare to small hatchbacks and sedans. These are huge vehicles that deliver a sense of invincibility due to their large size, heavy weight, and high center of gravity.

Driving reaction in terms of concentration, perception and clear visibility is utmost important for safe driving, but in SUVs clear visibility is a big issue. Due to these reasons drivers loose control which lead to accidents. It is also believed that among all Indian car categories, SUVs have the highest rate of rollover accidents resulting in fatalities.

To drive an SUV, driver has to be smart enough to have quick control over brakes and gears. A slight awareness of helpful tips for driving SUVs can readily help to reduce the rate of car accidents. There are many measures and tips that are beneficial to enhance SUV safety for all.

bullet Handling

SUVs have a greater risk of accidents because they possess high center of gravity. The risks associated can be reduced by smart handling. Steady speed, sudden maneuvers, attentiveness and cautious driving can help to enhance safety.

bullet Speed

It is really important to maintain an average speed with caution while turning the car towards a tighter corner. Most of the times, even smart drivers lose control and the vehicle hit the corner which eventually trips the car. It is advisable to drive at a safe speed especially on curved roads and on hilly areas where roads are steep and curves are tight.

bullet Safe Distance

SUVs need more distance for braking. So maintain safe distance while driving the vehicle especially on wet roads or during monsoon. Remember these are big cars and need big space for everything including parking, driving and even braking.

bullet Loading

The center of gravity of an SUV is greatly affected by the total weight of the passengers and the cargo carried in the vehicle. Overloading results in imbalance which further disturbs the gravitational force built at the centre. This is turn lead to accidents. The best measure to reduce such incidences is to carry the amount of weight permitted and chuck off the unnecessary weight from the cargo. Use the roof rack or cargo carrier at the top only if there is no alternative. Cargo weight at the top of the car makes the vehicle heavier by placing more pressure on the centre of gravity. This reduces the handling characteristics of the car and enhances the risks of rollover and trips.

bullet Proper Tyres

SUV tyres also play a vital role in reducing or increasing the car’s safety. Proper inflation and size of the tyres is of utmost significance to maintain the traction control. Loss of traction will further contribute to lack of vehicle control. If the tyre is not properly maintained and has some issues with the size or pressure, it is good to check it before loading the car. Ideal pressure and size is available in the car’s owner manual.

bullet Safety Belts

Every Indian car including the SUVs has seat belts that are designed keeping in mind the safety of every driver. According to the Indian Traffic Rules, it is compulsory for the driver and the front seat occupant to wear seat belts. Unfortunately, there are many who disobey this law and definitely they are among the ones who become victims of car accidents. In case of SUVs, most of the drivers or front seat passengers are ejected out of the vehicle in case of accident just because they are unbelted.

bullet Towing

When towing a car with the SUV, be alert and cautious because towing increases the weight and driving dynamics of the vehicle. As this vehicle needs broader turn, towing enhances the turning radius of the car. The increased weight also adds on to the actual stopping distance of the SUV. Be alert and cautious while braking and taking a sudden turn.
