The air pollution level is drastically increasing and the primary cause for it is the growing number of vehicles. With the advanced technologies wrapped around us, it is sad to say that the pollution level in India is still high. Everyone talks about automobile pollution, its impacts on environment, its contribution to global warming and preventions but very few people are aware of how it is actually caused.
Let’s have a little technical but informative knowledge as how the car contributes in increasing the
environmental pollution. In order to run the vehicle, combustion engine requires a mixture of air and fuel to burn and produce energy. In petrol engines the gases consist of a blend of unborn hydrocarbons (HC), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and the excess quantity of all these unburnt gases mixture result in automobile pollution.
The atmosphere can sustain a certain amount of emission but the problem arises when the vehicles starts emitting higher amount of these gases. This may be due to faulty engine, outdated technology in the vehicle, and bad fuel quality.
Automobile pollution is also caused when the air fuel mixture is not in correct ratio. Further the disproportionate ratio also leads to low power and wastage of fuel resulting in low performance and lower
fuel economy. Regular check up of vehicle’s emission should also be made. In order to reduce the pollution the Indian government has made obligatory the use of unleaded petrol for the petrol fuelled engine.
Here are few methods that will help you to bring down the pollution level:
- Maintain and service the vehicle at regular intervals.
- Oil change at recommended period even if the vehicle has been lying unused for a long time.
- Use of quality and branded lubricant is very important and low-grade oil can lead to further trouble.
- Tune and dirt free the carburetor.
- Adjust the idling speed for every 3000 km.
- Inspect spark-plug clearance and replace it if necessary.
- Low tyre pressure can also cause drag resulting in high fuel consumption.
With the above mentioned steps one can control the pollution level to some extent. A little extra care while driving can also bring down the air pollution level.
Dos and Don’ts
- Avoid unnecessary idling of the engine which may increase the fuel consumption and also results in extra emissions.
- If the car is going to idle for more than two minutes, it is best to turn off the ignition.
- Speeding leads to high fuel consumption resulting in higher pollution and therefore it is advisable to drive at the speed of 50-60 kmph in top gear.
A cleaner and greener Earth can solve environment related problems which could directly make the planet a better place to live in. So why not take an initiative right away without wasting much time.
