Car Care Tips during Monsoon

The monsoon showers are the most welcomed guests after the heat of the summer sun and monsoon is considered to be an important season in the weather cycle. It is very necessary to be ready to face and overcome the flooded and muddy roads during monsoon. During rainy season, the car can become a rust box in no time. These days cars come with rust proofing body and galvanized metal but it is still doubtful to what extent can these modern options safeguard the car from the fierce monsoon. It would be great if one can takes the car before and after the rain to a workshop and carry a car kit to take care of the car during the big season.

We have given below some tips to keep your car geared up for monsoon.
Clean and visible windshield is very important for a safe journey as it provides good visibility. Always make sure that the wipers are in working condition even before you take your car out for a spin in the rain. A faulty or malfunctioning wiper is an obstacle for clear visibility in a car during rainy seasons. The wiper blades should be of good quality and preferably new that will not make scratches on the windshield. Use some solution, or even shampoo, for the windshield wiper instead of normal water. Keep glass cleaner for windshield handy as it will help cleaning not only the outside surface but also the inside of the windshield. It is also helpful in cleaning other glass surfaces of the car - the front and rear windows as they also should remain clean for an unrestricted outside view.

After a drive in the rain, it is quite but natural that the car is covered with slush and mud. The car should be cleaned using solutions, for easy removal of the mud stains and the car should be covered and kept in a warm place during the rainy season. The car should be wiped dry, before it is covered with a dry waterproof car cover, but leave a gap. Special care should be given to scratches that go deep, exposing the metal body panel as it might lead to rust. The seats and other upholstery of the car will be damp and moist during monsoon season, which emits a damp smell inside the car. The upholstery cleaner should be used as wiping the wet or muddy upholstery with a cloth will not help it to remain clean and dry. Wet clothes can also leave permanent stain marks and it is advisable to clean it with upholstery cleaner, which will not only clean the surface but will leave a good fragrance. To avoid damp smell inside the car, mild car fresheners can also be used. Instead of the fabric mats, rubber mats will cope with the situation well, as they are easy to clean and will not get soaked and produce bad odor. An old set of floor mats, if available, could also be used during the monsoon as it could be used and then thrown away after the monsoon. The wheel wells and doorsills should be kept clean always as corrosion can set in easily in these areas.

The car tyres should be in good condition and be prepared for monsoon. Keeping a good spare tyre in the car is always recommended. Carrying a puncture repair kit is also a good option, but it is still a hard task both ways, so it's better to check the tyres beforehand.

The electrical components and accessories need special attention during the monsoon. It will always be useful to keep some extra fuses that will be useful if any electrical emergencies arise. The acid salts that will be deposited in the bare battery terminals will weaken the current flow from the battery to the rest of the electrical gadgets. In order to avoid this, the battery terminals can be greased. Having an extra spare bulb will also be useful if driving at night when it is raining.

It would be always safe to keep a hammer or other heavy object inside the car so that the windshield can be broken in case if the passenger is trapped inside the car and the car is stuck during a flood.

Be prepared for a safe monsoon as prevention is always better than cure.
