Ten Plug-In Cars To Watch Out For In 2010

The Year 2010 promises to be a good year for plug-in vehicle lovers. As of today, we have very few electric vehicles that can take on to a highway drive. But in the upcoming months, we are going to see the launch of a number of new plug-in cars. Here is a list of cars that will be making their debut in 2010.

bullet Aptera 2e

Aptera 2eAptera 2e is like no other car. The two-seat three-wheel electric car looks like straight out of the Star Trek. Aptera had a difficult year, and now that the company is back on its feet, we want to see this aerodynamic vehicle make it to the roads to regular customers before it is too late. With its unique shape and all-electric propulsion system, this car can be the next big thing in the automotive industry. People are already showing a liking to this car and it would not surprise us if it becomes the next Toyota Prius.

bullet Myers Motors Duo

Myers Motors DuoMyers Motors may be just another obscure name in the automobile market, but the Myers Motors Duo may face a number of hurdles before making it to the wish list of car buyers. But that does not undermine the potential of this new two-seat, three wheeled car. It has a top speed 75 mph and a single charge range of 60-mile. It is not sure yet as to when it will get into production, but we certainly would be looking forward to the launch of this vehicle.

bullet Mitsubishi i-MiEV

Mitsubishi i-MiEVMitsubishi has been selling the i-MiEV for some time now but this year will see the real take-off of this all-electric car. Japanese consumers have been treated to this all-electric delight for some time now, and Mitsubishi might just consider launching it in India too. The iMiev is quite spacious for a small car and will allow to easily cheat your way through the city traffic. The car manufacturer claims that this urban-oriented ride gives around 85 miles on a single charge and achieves a maximum speed of 80 mph.

bullet Coda Sedan

Coda SedanThe new Coda electric sedan will be launched in the US during the second quarter of 2010. The Coda sedan features an advanced all-electric powertrain and the grille-less hood does not look all that bad. All in all, it is a normal looking EV with zero tailpipe emissions. You can race from 0-60 mph in less than 11 seconds. The Coda sedan does a top speed of 80 mph and has a range of 100 to 120 miles. The electric sedan will be sold in the US with a price tag of $30,000 (after state and federal rebates).

bullet BYD e6

BYD e6The Chinese car maker, BYD, showed the E6 at the North American International Auto Show 2009. The company intends to export this car to the US and Spain by the end of this year. The BYD E6 is powered by a new low-cost, high-energy battery which, also known as the Fe battery, will give you a range of 205 miles per charge. The all-electric car can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in under 14 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 87mph. The car can be recharged from a household outlet.

bullet Think City

Think CityIf we look at Think's 2008 performance, 2009 will seem like a beautiful year for the car maker. The company not only managed to come out of bankruptcy but also met 2,300 outstanding orders for the City electric vehicle. Think claims that the two-seat City will have a range of over 100 miles. The City's 47-hp electric motor gives it a top speed of 62 mph. The car manufacturing company claims that the U.S.-spec car will be sold for about $20,000-after the tax rebates.

bullet Toyota PHEV Prius

Toyota PHEV PriusToyota will start the production of the plug-in version of the Prius hybrid in 2012. The Japanese car manufacturing company is moving too slowly considering that the production will take place so late and by that time, other car makers would have taken over in the plug-in war. The Toyota PHEV Prius will be strong competition to the others once it is launched. The PHEV Prius will be the first vehicle to use lithium ion batteries produced by Panasonic EV Energy Co. The battery will give a range of about 12-18 miles.

bullet Fisker Karma

Fisker KarmaThe Fisker Karma is a beautiful car that hardly resembles an electric car. The hybrid or extended-range electric car will hit the showrooms very soon. Fisker claims that the vehicle will give 67 miles per gallon and its CO2 emissions will be as low as 83 grams per 100 km. With a top speed of 125 mph, the Karma accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds.

bullet Nissan Leaf

Nissan LeafThe Nissan Leaf intends to take the US market by storm as the company plans to sell the car at a sticker price that resembles the price tag of any petroleum-powered vehicle. The Nissan Leaf, powered by a unique array of thin, laminated lithium ion cells, can go 100 miles per charge, looks good and can seat 4 people. The Nissan Leaf will be sold in the US with a price tag of about $25,000.

bullet Chevy Volt

Chevy VoltThe US consumers have been waiting for the Chevrolet Volt like no other electric car. The Chevrolet Volt, powered by 400-pound lithium ion battery pack, and gives a range of 40 miles. GM calls the Volt an "extended-range electric vehicle" (or E-REV.) General Motors will price the Volt around $35,000 (estimated). The plug-in hybrid will make it to the US market by November 2010.
