The Top 10 Fuel-Efficient Petrol Cars in India

When you decide to buy a car, one of the most important factors to consider is the mileage of the car. And this has become all the more important with the fuel prices going high after the Union budget or otherwise also. Right from the fuel quality to air conditioning to the everyday driving conditions, there are various factors which influence the fuel efficiency of a car. Even as the world moves towards more fuel efficient automobile technologies, it becomes necessary to discuss the state of fuel economy in India.

Tata Nano - 23.65 kmpl

In addition to being the cheapest car in India (and the world), the Tata Nano is also the most fuel efficient. It gives a mileage of about 23.65 kmpl. The high fuel efficiency has been achieved with a 2-cylinder, 624 cc rear engine and rear wheel drive system, and 4-speed manual transmission. The small wonder from Tata Motors has capitalised on the fuel economy factor like none other.

Safety of the car is, however, something that we would rather not talk about in this section.

Maruti A-Star, along with its other attractive features like stylish looks and great features, fuel efficiency is another car which will make you choose it over the other cars. No wonder it has become a global favourite in the very first year of its launch.

Fitted with the latest invention in engine technology, the new generation KB Series, the A-Star offers a fuel economy of 19.6 kmpl.

Chevrolet Beat - 18.61 kmpl

The latest launch from Chevrolet, the Beat offers you a fuel efficiency of 18.61 kmpl. Beat, with a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine and a 5-speed manual gearbox, provides a very crispy throttle response in stop-and-go-traffic of a city. The S-TEC II engine of the Chevrolet Beat employs PDA (Port De-Activation) system that ensures high exhaust gas recirculation, combustion stability at low speeds and optimal performance at high speeds and the much important improved fuel efficiency.

Chevrolet Spark - 18.29 kmpl

Although Spark may remind you of Daewoo Matiz in many ways, its fuel efficiency is a different deal altogether. The relatively inexpensive and stylish Beat comes with 4 cylinders 1 litre (995 cc) engines and a 5-speed manual transmission.

The most important feature of the Spark is that it comes with a Siemens EMS which monitors emissions and allows it to burn fuel more efficiently. With a fuel efficiency of 18.29 kmpl, it loses the third spot to Chevrolet Beat by a few points.

Chevrolet Cruze MT - 18.27 kmpl

Well, here is another model from Chevrolet that has made it to our top ten fuel efficient cars list. And mind you, we are not talking about another hatch but the executive sedan, Cruze. Chevrolet Cruze, with its aggressive and sharp looks, has become an instant hit with the sedan lovers of India. When we talk about fuel efficient cars, invariably we think of small cars but here is something that will change everyone's perception. Chevrolet Cruze (Manual Transmission) has a 1.8-litre in-line 4 engine, and it gives an amazingly unbelievable fuel efficiency of 18.27 kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki Estilo - 18.2 kmpl

With the entry of so many small cars in India, one would think Estilo won't make it to our list of top ten fuel efficient cars. But Estilo, with a fuel economy of 18.2 kmpl, gives a tough competition to its counterparts and makes it to our list at the sixth position.

Estilo is powered by the same 1.0 L K-Series 3-cylinder engine, which is featured in the A-Star, and produces a maximum power of 67 bhp@6200 rpm. The engine is paired with a 5 speed manual transmission which enhances the car's fuel efficiency.

Maruti Suzuki Alto - 18.1 kmpl

Maruti Suzuki Alto has an innovative design and supreme performance. Powered potent 796cc 3-cylinder engine, the car can give a maximum power of 46 bhp@6200 rpm. Maruti Suzuki cars are well known for their fuel efficiency and even Alto would give testimony to that.

Maruti Suzuki Alto, with 18.1 kmpl, falls at the seventh place on our list, just behind the Maruti Suzuki Estilo.

Hyundai i10 1.2 litre - 18.06 kmpl

Hyundai car give competition to Maruti Suzuki with its amazing line-up of compact cars, which are not only good looking but also boast of fuel efficient engines.

The Hyundai i10 features a 1.2-litre Kappa, four-cylinder engine with double overhead cam shaft (DOHC) and breathes through 16 valves. Peak power of the car is rated at 79 bhp at 5200rpm. The fuel economy of the car, at 18.06 kmpl, secures a place at the eighth position.

Hyundai i10 1.1 litre - 17.83 kmpl

Hyundai i10 1.1-litre boasts of the Inline-four Intelligent Responsive Drive Engine (iRDE) that churns out 66 bhp at 5,500 revs. The aluminum Kappa engine, the first in its class, delivers low NVH levels (noise vibration and harshness) with low emission output. Hyundai's intelligent responsive technology improves the performance and mileage of the car.

The Hyundai i10 1.1 litre gives an amazing mileage, just a little behind its 1.2 litre twin, of 17.83 kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz BS IV - 17.7 kmpl

Last but not the least, the Maruti Ritz makes it to our list at the tenth position. The car offers a mileage of 17.7 kmpl.

The Maruti Suzuki Ritz features a BS IV compliant K12M petrol engine. The1.2-litre petrol engine can produce a maximum power of 85 bhp. The new K12M engine uses plastic parts, shortened piston skirts, and raisin coatings on the piston to keep the engine low weight low. Moreover, the engine gives improved performance with high grade engine oil, high-tech spark plugs, plastic intake manifold, and DOHC camshaft. All these features make the engine highly fuel efficient.
