Top 5 Future Electric Cars

Electric cars have always been a hot topic for discussion in the global car market. The concept has always been fascinating because it is what the future of car industry demands. The idea of awesome power output may not fit well with electric cars but when the consideration comes to automotive pollution, rising fuel prices, and green marketing galore, electric cars are obviously the best for the industry.

Electric cars are powered by electric motor and batteries and hence they produce no tailpipe emissions. They also reduce the dependency on oil and the running cost of a car. Due to these winning characteristics many car buyers have started showing their interest in electric cars and hybrid concepts. The rustling interest has eventually pushed all car manufacturers to design and produce electric cars.

At present in India there is only one electric car, the Reva. Furthermore, other car manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki and General Motors have also announced their plans of introducing a range of electric cars in India. On the contrary, in the international car market there are many electric cars plying on roads. Many car manufacturers have showcased their electric car concepts in various auto shows organized around the world and some have even started production of their concepts.
Here are some of the future electric cars ready to hit the market in the coming years:

bullet  Chevrolet Volt

Chevrolet Volt is an amazing electric car introduced by General Motors and is expected to make its debut by 2010. The styling of the car is just inspiring with stylish exterior adornments and brilliant design cues. The beauty of the Volt’s design is revolutionary and forms an essential element of the Volt’s aim to be the most fuel-efficient Chevrolet car ever.

The propulsion system of the car is powerful and will definitely redefine the automotive world. It is powered by the E-Flex Propulsion System that will use a lithium-ion battery with a variety of onboard power sources. These power resources comprising gas or ethanol will be used to recharge the battery of the car while driving. Unlike traditional cars, the Volt will use zero gasoline and produce zero emissions.

bullet  Nissan Electric Car

Nissan Electric Car is expected to be launched in the U.S. car market in 2010. The prototype of Nissan’s forthcoming electric car looks similar to a breadbox but the technology that the car manufacturer has packed within the car is worth appreciation.

The electric car will be fitted with an 80 kW electric motor powered by lithium-ion battery packs that will be stored in the floor. This position of the battery pack will help improve fuel efficiency, performance, and stability of the car. Nissan electric car’s battery can be charged with a 220 volt outlet in four hours, with a standard 110 volt outlet in 14 hours, and with a super 480 V outlet in just 14 minutes. It will also have a unique body style and will be a front-wheel drive vehicle.

bullet  Mitsubishi iMiEV

Mitsubishi iMiEV (Mitsubishi in-wheel Electric Vehicle) was a concept sports car showcased at the Paris Auto Show in 2008. Now the car is ready to hit the market by 2010 with 47 kW motor and 16 kWh lithium ion batteries that can be charged at home or a parking lot from a simple and an ordinary electric outlet. The electric car with its powerful electric motor can reach a top speed of 130 km/h and has a range of 130 km.

The iMiEV's battery pack comprises of 22 modules and each of these modules consists of four cells that can be installed in transverse or vertical position under the car’s floor. The on-board charger takes about 12 to 14 hours for a complete charge on 110 V outlet and about 6 to 7 hours on a 220 V outlet. The car also comes with a fast charger connector that charges 80% of the battery in just 30 minutes.

bullet GM Saturn Vue Plug-in Hybrid

GM Saturn Vue Plug-in Hybrid is another great introduction by General Motors. The car will use an upgraded version of GM’s 2-mode hybrid system and plug-in technology. The car will feature lithium-ion batteries that will be incorporated into a two interior permanent magnet motors and a 3.6-litre gas engine mated to direct injection system.

With the lithium-ion battery the car will offer impressive fuel efficiency. The battery can be charged completely in four to five hours by just plugging the car to any household electric outlet of 110 V. In the car the connection port will be on the front fender. The car will also have two driving modes, one for city driving and one for highway driving. In city driving the plug-in mode will be enough to run a limited speed and at higher speeds and acceleration the hybrid engine of the Saturn Vue with the 3.6-litre engine would power the car.

bullet Subaru R1E

The Subaru R1e is a battery-electric two-seater microcar undergoing development. The car is being produced and is undergoing various test for its reliability and dependability by a Japanese electric company. It is expected to be introduced in the market in the next couple of years with a lithium-ion battery that is developed in cooperation with NEC, a Japanese multinational IT company. The battery of the car can be charged to about 80% in about eight hours with a special rapid charger and a full charge also in eight hours with a normal household 110 V outlet. The electric car with its effective battery has a range of 80 km and a top speed of 100 km/h.
