Driver's Safety Features

Driver's Safety Features
Driving to work and back home is an activity that most cannot avoid. Today, driving has been associated with various risks that may be fatal. In many of the Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Kolkatta, driving is a big challenge because of the congested city roads and chaotic traffic. Hence, it is necessary that driver’s in India should be more careful while driving a car, lest they become entangled in a legal case. They could also end up being victims of reckless driving by other roads users. When a vehicle travelling at speed of 60 mph collides against another object, it takes just one fifth of the second or the collision to be over.

Considering these potential factors, it is imperative that the driver uses the basic car safety features like collapsible steering wheel, head restraints, and seat belts offered by every car manufacturer in every Indian car model as well as in the imported cars.

Collapsible Steering Wheel

The steering wheel, also known as driving wheel, is a collection of various equipments, connections and wheel which helps steer the car in the desired direction by the driver. It is the only interface between the car’s energy and the driver who sets it in motion. Though it is one of the most essential components in the car, it can be hazardous sometimes.

In case of a car accident that may pull the driver forward with greater force, the steering wheel can badly injure the driver. To avoid such kind of injury, car manufacturer shave devised the collapsible steering wheel which absorbs the powerful energy of the impact during frontal crashes. This kind of energy absorbing steering wheel first appeared in General Motor cars and was later adopted by Ford across all its muscle cars including Mustang. In India, major car manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra install different kinds of collapsible steering wheel.

This new driving wheel consists of a steering wheel, steering linkage, instrument panel and a plastic wrapped perforated section. When the driver’s body comes in contact with the steering wheel, the plastic wrapped section collapses. This transfers the energy to steering wheel rather than to the driver.

Thus the driver is saved from being crushed between seat and steering wheel.

Head Restraints

The head restraints or head support first appeared in Maruti Suzuki cars. Head restraints are vital for daily driving and mainly during accidents when the neck may have a severe injury. The neck jerk forward or backward at high speed can prove to be fatal.

Neck injuries are most common during car collision. While driving, the driver body movement is in sync with the motion of car. When another vehicle collides against the car, the vehicle seat accelerates the forward movement of torso. An unsupported neck will lag behind and this difference in motion leads to bend or stretch of neck, resulting in injuries. The head restraint synchronizes with the seat movement and helps move the torso and neck in intensity.

To minimize whiplash injury, the headrest should be placed in a proper position at the back of a driver’s head, giving a total support for head and the spinal in case of any emergency.

Seat Belts

Seat belts are one of the most important safety equipments in a car. Car seat belts hold drivers to their seat during a collision. Without them, a driver would be thrown off his seats and sustain grievous to fatal injuries. However, wearing a seat belt improves the chances of driver’s survival by 50 percent.

When a car is in motion, the body of the driver also moves at the same speed and in the same direction. However, if the vehicle were to abruptly halt due to collision the body of the driver would still be in motion at the same speed and same direction. The force of the collision combined with the speed of the car would throw the occupants off their seats. They could bang into the steering wheel or fly off the windshield. Most often such events prove to be fatal.

However, if the person is fastened to a seat with belts, the driver would remain on seat, thereby minimizing damages to body.
