Top 5 Green Cars of 2009

With rise in awareness of environmental pollution and its affects on the way of life, people’s love for green cars has increased considerably over the past decade. Eco-friendly cars not only have a greener impact on nature but are also economical and help save fast-depleting fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel. Car manufacturers have been going full swing to meet the changing scenario of consumer demands and have invested heavily on research and development of greener technologies for their cars.

Every year sees its share of new green cars with eco-friendly technologies and only a few of them qualify as the best in several respects. The list of the best green cars is formulated after the cars are evaluated on the basis of specific criteria. Each new “green” car comes with innovative technologies and new generation design to meet the changing requirements of car buyers across the world. The focus is always on environment friendliness with zero compromise on meeting the latest emission norms. Every new car with greener technology is a step towards a pollution-free environment and insurance for a green future where later generations get to breather cleaner and fresher air.

As mentioned above, every year sees its share of green cars among which a few qualify as the best. This year too, the list of green car nominees includes models like the BMW 335d, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Saturn VUE 2 Mode Hybrid, Smart Fortwo, and Volkswagen Jetta TDI. There has been a lot of research and evaluation to finalize the above list of the top green cars of 2009. Among the above cars, one will be announced ‘Green Car of the Year’ on November 20, 2009 at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The Green Car of the Year program welcomes all types of environment-friendly green car technologies, fuels, and powerplants. To be picked as a nominee for the title, it is necessary for the car to show a primary eco-friendly feature that will have a great impact on environment conservation and also it is mandatory to produce the scheduled launch date of the car to ensure that it will be available in the market for sale during the award year.

The above criteria could prevent some of the cars that are generally perceived as being green from making it to the title. A few fine cars which failed to make the list of nominees include the Tesla Roadster, electric MINI E, and Honda Insight.
Here are the nominees for the title of ‘Green Car of the Year’:

bullet BMW 3 Series 335d

The 335d from BMW’s stable is one of the most innovative diesel cars ever created. It delivers an impressive 265 bhp of power through its 3.0-litre inline-six-cylinder diesel engine while delivering a clean and fuel-efficient drive. The car’s diesel injection achieves this through its advanced piezo injector technology and direct fuel injection system. Unlike traditional fuel injection systems, the direct fuel injection on the 335d feeds each cylinder directly without having to wait for the intake stroke of the engine. This system delivers enhanced fuel economy and controlled emissions. Nitric Oxides in the emissions are further cleaned out by Blue Performance technology on the car which injects an odourless cleaning solution into the exhaust system. This advanced diesel car from BMW meets strict emissions criteria in all 50 states of the United States of America.

bullet Ford Fusion Hybrid

This is Ford’s first hybrid sedan and it qualifies as the most fuel-efficient hybrid sedan in America by being able to deliver an average fuel economy of 17 km/l. The car’s petrol-electric hybrid system can speed up to 76 km/h on electric motor alone (faster than any other hybrid vehicle). Over that, the car’s 3.0-litre Duratec V6 engine is FlexFuel capable which means that it can run purely on unleaded petrol as well as E85 or a mix of both. E85 fuel is a combination of 85% ethanol and just 15% gasoline.

The Fusion Hybrid has plenty more eco-friendliness to it with features such as SmartGauge with EcoGuide which provides complete control over the operation of the hybrid system, earth-friendly cloth fabric seats which are made from 85 percent post-production polyester fibres which would otherwise be discarded as industrial waste, and regenerative braking system which charges the batteries of the hybrid system using energy generated during braking.

bullet Saturn VUE 2 Mode Hybrid

The hybrid car comes with General Motors’ new dual-mode hybrid cars technology which employs an intelligent hybrid motor that consumes very little fuel by relying more on the powerful battery system. The VUE Hybrid has the best highway fuel economy of 14 km/l which is highest for a crossover SUV. Low-rolling resistance tyres on the car reduce road friction to deliver better fuel efficiency.

bullet Smart Fortwo

The Smart Fortwo’s Micro Hybrid Drive (MHD) technology is extremely well suited to city driving conditions where it serves faithfully to save fuel and reduce emissions. The mini car’s 70 bhp 1.0-litre inline-three-cylinder engine requires only 5 litres of petrol to cover 100 kms. The MHD system reduces CO2 emissions by 103 grams per kilometer and 8% reduced consumption of petrol. To save fuel, the intelligent start/stop system of the MHD shuts down the engine when the driver brakes and vehicle speed falls below 8 km/h such as at traffic signals. The engine is re-started within a fraction of a second after the driver relaxes the brake pedal.

bullet Volkswagen Jetta TDI

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI for 2009 has been developed based on the company’s vast diesel experience in America. The car runs on ultra-low sulfur diesel that has 97 percent less sulfur content to drastically reduce emissions. The TDI’s common rail diesel injection technology reduces soot in emissions by about 95%. The car advanced clean diesel technology is highly fuel efficient and clean while also delivering impressive performance and high ride quality.
