Stay Away From Stolen Cars

Stolen cars trading have become a booming business and a lucrative crime in India today. Research has revealed that 1 out every 10 cars are being stolen every day across the country. Government authorities and police are working together to put an end to this crime but car owners also have to work in conjunction to get the results. There are multiple reasons why car thieves steal cars. Some do it for fun and some for money. One should keep an eye on some details before buying a used car.
Emphasize on the following tips to avoid buying a stolen car:
Be suspicious if any car is being sold at an unbelievable low price. Smart buyers always research on the market value before buying a car.

Be cautious if the seller does not provide the complete contact information. Don’t ever trust on a mobile number.

Verify if the seller is an agent, a car dealer or a private seller.

Visit the place where the car is being sold and if the seller is a private seller, inspect the garage, driveways and the rest of the surroundings. The seller may have removed or changed original parts and replaced them with cheap ineffective parts.

Ask for the car title and a copy of the car registration. If there is any kind of doubt, don’t go for that particular car. In some cases, robbers also reproduce a new copy. So, it is always advisable to get the car registration copy verified with the Department of Motor Vehicle.

If the car seller is private, tally the address with the details mentioned in the registration certificate.

Also, ask for the maintenance records. This will help the buyer to check the mileage, performance and working of the car. In this record, the buyer can even check whether the odometer is tampered or not. In most cases, sellers selling stolen cars don’t have any maintenance record.

Get the complete insurance details and verify the information with the insurance department.

The buyer must know where the engine and chassis numbers are written. Verify these numbers and check for any alternations or change. These numbers are engraved and are really difficult to alter and if done so, some signs will definitely be seen. Ensure that these numbers tally with the numbers written on the registration certificate of that particular car.

When making the payment after inspection and verification, make only 55 percent of the total cots price offered. If possible pay by any certified cheque.

Most of the thieves are master in the art of changing the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and rollback the odometer to give a complete new appearance to the car. Ask for a receipt with all the details including the VIN, engine number, chassis number, price offered, date of registration and signature of the car seller.

These are few simple tips but are really helpful to choose the right car and to ward-off the reselling of stolen cars.
