Summer is not cool for cars either

Commuting in summer is almost like passing through the fires of hell. But travelling in a small car is almost like a sitting in an oven. Suffocation by heat is a common complaint received during this season of the year. The car is also affected by summer.

Suffocation

Small cars dominate the Indian roads and hence most of them come ill-equipped with air circulation facilities. Most common incident like leaving your kids or even pets in a car locked from outside, can damage your car.

Temperatures could rise significantly inside the cabin which could choke their breathing. Body temperatures could rise beyond tolerable limits and cause a heat stroke. Temperature could vary anywhere from 2 to 5 degrees in cars parked in heat for more than one hour resulting in suffocation. The kids could become unconscious; permanently brain damaged and heat can even lead to death.

There is misconception that the light colored car will be cooler than a dark colored one. But that is not true, heat does not spare any colour. Studies have shown that a white colour car is as hot as a dark blue colour car parked for one hour simultaneously.

Damages to car

The scorching heat and radiation can damage your cars exterior as well as interiors in several ways. Some of them could include dulling, deterioration in performance, cracking of exterior paint work. The damages in the car interiors could include the deterioration of dashboard plastic; upholstery, plastic door panels. However, this will occur when cars are parked under the sun for several months.

But the worst part is when you re-enter the car after parking it in open space for several hours. The difference in cabin temperature and outside temperature could just take you by surprise. The steering wheel feels, hot, there is a pungent odor in the cabin and the seats become unbearable enough to sit. You could feel that the air conditioner is just not functioning as effectively as it did in winter.

All of the above can be prevented if you take certain steps to control temperatures in the cabin.

  1. Get the car an extra coat of paint with UV radiation protection. There are several brands of thin films over paints, in the after market, that come with heat resistance an UV protection.
  2. Get the windows fitted with deep tinted glass and wind shades. This helps contain some of the effects of heat hitting the cabin. If a tinted glass is not in your budget, buy a tinted film and place it on the windshield and glass whenever you park your car. This is because dashboard and crack when exposed, for long durations, to the heat and radiation.
  3. Try parking in shade if possible, this could save a lot of trouble. If you do not find a parking place make sure that only the rear seat or the passenger seat is exposed to sun radiation .
